On Monday, September 25, 2018, the first night of the season 27 Dancing With the Stars two-night premiere aired, and it was jam-packed with a whole bunch of dancing with a whole lot of new celebrities!
By the end of the night, Joe and Jenna were on the bottom of the leaderboard with 14 out of 30 points. Tinashe and Brandon as well as DeMarcus and Gleb found themselves at the top of the leaderboard with 23 out of 30 points.
After the show, I tweeted a poll for you all to fill out to let us know what score you would have given each of the dances. Well, those responses were put together to determine what The Readers’ average score was, which was based off of which score was the most selected. In the event that two consecutive numbers would have the same number of votes each, the outcome would favor the higher score. If the two numbers had the same number of votes but were not consecutive, the median of the two would be used instead, while rounding to the greater whole number if it comes out to an non-integer number.
So, here is a review of the night, along with your scores, and commentary from Paul Bentley!
Premiere Night 1 Performances
The thirteen new couples for season 27 of Dancing With Stars performed their first dances. The styles included in the premiere are Cha-Cha-Cha, Foxtrot, Jive, Quickstep, and Salsa.
[Order of the Judges’ Scores: Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli]
Mary Lou Retton and Sasha Farber
Cha-Cha-Cha
Treasure by Bruno Mars
The Judges’ Scores: 6, 7, 6 (19/30)
The Readers’ Score: 6
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Mary Lou was just a giant ball of energy out there on the dance floor! She truly held her own and really put a lot of thought in every movement she made, even though some of her energy might have caused her to be out of sync with Sasha and become a bit “steppy” at times. Although I guess her not being able to hear the pre-music clicks with that roaring crowd contributed to that, too! She did better than I expected, and I think she will do even better with her second Cha-Cha-Cha tomorrow night!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6
#TeamStickIt 1(800)868-3409
Milo Manheim and Witney Carson
Cha-Cha-Cha
Free Free Free by Pitbull featuring Theron Theron
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 6, 7 (20/30)
The Readers’ Score: 7
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This guy knows how to do a Cha-Cha-Cha! Sometimes younger contestants tend to be a bit awkward on the dance floor, but that was not the case with Milo! Milo has a natural charisma in his movement, and is overall just fun to watch. He was on point both in hold with Witney and on his own in the side-by-side sections. I do have to say, though, that he needs to work on composing himself more and cleaning up his foot placement But other than that, I think I might have underestimated this couple pre-season!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8
#TeamWitlo 1(800)868-3410
Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe
Foxtrot
Do You Believe in Magic by Aly & AJ
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 5, 6 (18/30)
The Readers’ Score: 7
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This was a cute little dance. Evanna and Keo were like a couple in love in this Foxtrot! Evanna was quirky and elegant, and it made for a feel-good watch. Evanna had some stellar extensions in her out-of-hold section towards the ends, but she rushed a bit while in hold. And I know it’s hard because of the height difference, but Evanna needs to strengthen her hold just a little more, which I think she’ll be able to improve on for tomorrow night’s show!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7
#TeamKevanna 1(800)868-3405
Danelle Umstead and Artem Chigvintsev
Foxtrot
Rise Up by Andra Day
The Judges’ Scores: 6, 6, 6 (18/30)
The Readers’ Score: 7
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: I love this woman so much! Danelle was the definition of beauty in this dance, and it extended into her dancing. Even without being able to see visual cues, she was able to able to follow Artem’s lead really well. As far as Foxtrot technique goes, I she got more and more unsteady and the dance went on, and her hold weakened along with it. She also needs to work on smoothing out her rise-and-fall. But even with the room for improvement, this was one of my favorite dances of the night!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6
#TeamBlindFaith 1(800)868-3403
Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess
Jive
T-R-O-U-B-L-E by Travis Tritt
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 6, 7 (20/30)
The Readers’ Score: 5
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Well Bobby surely made a memorable first impression, didn’t he?! I couldn’t ask him to be any more enthusiastic! In fact, maybe that fall after the dance showed that he was a bit too enthusiastic! XD Bobby was quick and completely connected to both Sharna and the music, but his feet weren't pointed, and his shoulders were too forward. While his footwork and legwork was “big,” his upper body was too “small.” So hopefully Bobby will be able to contain his energy a little more and clean up his mistakes for his next Jive!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6
#TeamBeautyAndTheGeek 1(800)868-3402
Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke
Salsa
Dinero by Jennifer Lopez featuring DJ Khaled & Cardi B
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 8 (22/30)
The Readers’ Score: 7
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Juan Pablo and Cheryl were without a doubt the hottest couple of the night! Juan knew what the audience wanted to see, and he brought it! He had loose hips and a strong stage presence. Unfortunately, I felt as though the choreography was too stop-and-go for my taste, so the transitions between fast and slow were not very smooth. And I would have liked more Salsa footwork overall. I think there’s more that Juan Pablo has to offer, but we just haven’t seen it yet. In his second Salsa, I hope that he becomes in tune with Cheryl and anticipate the upcoming choreography less.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7
#TeamChernando 1(800)868-3408
Nikki Glaser and Gleb Savchenko
Salsa
Tres Deseos by Gloria Estefan
The Judges’ Scores: 6, 5, 6 (17/30)
The Readers’ Score: 5
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This was actually a pretty solid Salsa, but I can’t help to feel a little disappointed about it. I really like Nikki as a person, so I was rooting for her to come out with a bang, but she unfortunately ended up with one of the less memorable performances of the night. Nikki was sexy and had amazing hips, but she just didn’t execute the dance with enough force. I think she was maybe trying to suppress some of her energy so she could remain collected, but it looks like she went a little too far with it. And the nerves were obvious with her because I could almost “see” her counting all of the steps in her head. After this dance, I am worried that Nikki and Gleb might be the first couple to go home, which would be a shame because I think this couple has a whole lot more to offer!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6
#TeamGlikki 1(800)868-3412
Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten
Jive
Good Golly Miss Molly by Little Richard
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 7 (21/30)
The Readers’ Score: 7
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Looks like we have a contender on our hands! Alexis had top-notch kicks and flicks, albeit a slight mistake towards the end. But on the same taken, her steps felt a little too calculated, so it took away from some some of the grace. She was sharp and crisp all-around, and had a nice “fun” connection with Alan throughout. These two crushed this Jive!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8
#TeamRenTen 1(800)868-3401
John Schneider and Emma Slater
Foxtrot
Good Ol’ Boys from Dukes of Hazzard by Waylon Jennings
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 5, 6 (18/30)
The Readers’ Score: 6
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This was the only dance of the night that had me a bit underwhelmed, but a lot of it had to do with the uninspiring music. John actually did a respectable job with the Foxtrot, considering he’s one of the older contestants this season. He let Emma guide her throughout the performance, and I think that was a good choice for them to make. Of course, his frame was a mess and his posture was weak, but I do have to point out that he had some decent footwork, though! Will John and Emma be the first ones eliminated? Maybe. But I have a feeling that this couple has enough votes to make it to next week!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6
#TeamSuperDuke 1(800)868-3407
Tinashe and Brandon Armstrong
Jive
I'm a Lady by Meghan Trainor
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 7. 8 (23/30)
The Readers’ Score: 8
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Way to go, Tinashe and Brandon! Brandon proved himself as a competent pro with his fresh, challenging choreography for Tinashe, although I think was a smidge too repetitive at certain points. Tinashe was quick and smooth will the Jive content, but I did notice that she started to throw her arms away towards the end and didn’t quite point her toes enough. But those are easy things to fix. She was a superstar out there, and I have a feeling that she will last this competition for quite some time!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8
#TeamFireAndFlames 1(800)868-3413
Nancy McKeon and Val Chmerkovskiy
Quickstep
It Don’t Mean a Thing by Club Des Belugas
The Judges’ Scores: 6, 6, 6 (18/30)
The Readers’ Score: 6
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed this routine. Nancy is one of the “older” celebrities this season, but she had plenty of pep in her step for this Quickstep! And Val didn’t go easy on her with the choreography either! Nancy had lots and lots of energy! Yes, she got jumbled more than once, and she had a very loose posture, but she gave it her all and didn’t hold back! I think she is in danger of going home during the second night of the premiere, but if she does end up eliminated, at least she can be proud of all the effort she put in to her dancing!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6
#TeamMcVal 1(800)868-3411
Joe Amabile and Jenna Johnson
Quickstep
Fish Out of Water by Leo Soul
The Judges’ Scores: 5, 4, 5 (14/30)
The Readers’ Score: 6
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Before the season began, I wasn’t able to get a good sense of Joe’s personality, so I’m glad I got to see his funny self in his rehearsal package. That great personality shone through in his Quickstep, but the dance itself unfortunately flopped. He was off time, shaky, and completely out of tune with Jenna pretty much the entire time, but at least he had a big smile on his face while doing it! It was hard to watch some of his mistakes, so I’m glad he has the chance to redeem himself in night two. These two are on the bottom of the scoreboard right now, so they are going to need the votes to last tomorrow’s elimination, and I honestly don’t know if he is able to get them or not.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 5
#TeamCheckUsOut 1(800)868-3406
DeMarcus Ware and Lindsay Arnold
Cha-Cha-Cha
Sweet Sensation by Flo Rida
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 7, 8 (23/30)
The Readers’ Score: 8
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: What a fun dance! DeMarcus let his “closeted dancer” out, and I’m glad that he did! He had such smooth and seamless movement with groove in all the right places! If I were to give advice to DeMarcus for his next Cha-Cha-Cha, though, I would tell him to be more aware of keeping his arms straight and poised, connect with Lindsay a little more, and watch out with wailing his and Lindsay’s arms too much when in hold. He is just such a strong dancer, which was particularly evident in his amazing footwork and body rolling, but there needs to be a little more fluidity. DeMarcus and Lindsay are destined for the finals!

Premiere Night 1 Awards
Most Entertaining Dance: Milo and Witney’s Cha-Cha-Cha
Milo and Witney came out with a high-octane and very youthful dance that really kept the hype up after the first dance of the night!
Best Costumes: Nikki and Gleb’s Salsa Costumes
I liked Nikki’s giant skirt that got removed, which revealed a simple yet sexy red Cha-Cha-Cha dress. Gleb also had a simple outfit, but a male pro can never go wrong with an open shirt and suspenders!
Best Choreography: Alexis and Alan’s Jive
That Jive from Alexis and Alan was nonstop fun from start to finish. It was cute, fun, and overall a good variety of Jive content!
Strongest Couple: DeMarcus and Lindsay
DeMarcus has such a natural sense of movement and great showmanship, which was also reciprocated by Lindsay. They were both such powerhouses, and their energies combined made for one heck of a memorable premiere performance!
Stand-Out Moment of the Night: Bobby Tripping After His Jive
I love Bobby’s enthusiasm for being on the show, so seeing him being so excited to the point that he tripped and fell after his Jive made me happy! XD
Furthermore
Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: The opening number was a bit simpler than usual, but I liked the simplicity of it. It’s a bit of a bummer that the celebrity contestants weren’t featured in it, but I understand that there were time constraints. The pros were great as always, so is there really anything I need to say about it?! XD
As for tomorrow’s elimination, I’m thinking that the couples in the most danger are Nikki & Gleb, Joe & Jenna, and John & Emma. However, since Tuesday’s scores and votes will be added to Monday’s scores and votes, anything can change. But if I had to name just one couple as a prediction for elimination, I guess I would say Joe and Jenna.
Tuesday Night Show Information
For night two of the premiere, the couples will perform a second routine to the same dance style that they performed in night one, hoping to improve from Monday night.
