DWTS: Juniors - Week 7 (Time Machine Night) Dance Overviews

The competition is getting heated up, and on Sunday, November 25, it was Time Machine Night for the Quarter-Finals of Dancing With the Stars: Juniors season one! Five couples performed a dance to represent a different decade, but after the elimination at the end of the night, only four of them remained.

With thoughts on the night of performances, here is Paul Bentley, along with scores from The Readers, as determined by an online poll!

Time Machine Dances

The five remaining couples performed individual dances to represent different eras of the past and the future. At the end of the night, one team was eliminated from the show.

[Order of the Judges’ Scores: Val Chmerkovskiy, Mandy Moore, Adam Rippon]

Miles Brown and Rylee Arnold, Mentored by Lindsay Arnold
1950’s Jive

Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 10 (28/30)

The Readers’ Score: 10

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: These kids have moves for days! Every little aspect of this Jive from the I Love Miles theme to the charisma of Miles and Rylee made me happy. Miles has had so many great dances this season, but I think I’m going to say that this was his best dance yet! He had such a suave movement to him that many celebrities on the adult version of DWTS aren’t even able to accomplish. It is very reminiscent of Alfonso Ribeiro’s quality of performance in season 19, which was absolute impeccable! Team Lindsay have been consistent crowd-pleasers, and rightfully so. This couple is such a delight, and seeing them make it through another week is absolutely fantastic!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 10

Mackenzie Ziegler and Sage Rosen, Mentored by Gleb Savchenko
1980’s Jazz

Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 8, 9 (26/30)

The Readers’ Score: 9

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Although I do sort of agree with the scores for this dance (the 8 was a bit low), I think the judges were maybe a bit too harsh Mackenzie and Sage. Sure, I can see why the judges would want to connect to the dance more, but I think they focused too much on the negative, especially because this dance was actually really good! I thought the choreography was some of the best Jazz content I have seen from Gleb, and I think Mackenzie executed it exceptionally well, despite some overly powerful moments that could have been toned down a bit. I know the judges are going hard on Mackenzie because of her dance experience, which I understand, but I have to give credit where credit is due.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

Mandla Morris and Brightyn Brems, Mentored by Cheryl Burke
Futuristic Paso Doble
Eliminated- 5th Place

Gangsta’s Paradise by 2WEI
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 8 (24/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: I loved the cinematographic and intense feel Mandla and Brightyn brought to this Paso Doble. It felt truly immersive to the apocalyptic futuristic theme, which was perfect for the style. All of Mandla’s lines were really clean, although it was evident that his shaping and and control could have been a bit better. It was actually a great performance, but when compared to the other routines from the night, it ended up being one of the weaker dances, despite it not actually being “weak” at all. In any case, Team Cheryl had a good run this season, and them getting fifth place is nothing to be ashamed about! Mandla grew on me more and more as the weeks went by, but as I have said before, there are so many good teams this season, and because there really weren’t any weak links on Sunday night, a strong team would have to be eliminated, and that just so happened to be Mandla and Brightyn.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8

Ariana Greenblatt and Artyon Celestine, Mentored by Brandon Armstrong
1940’s Quickstep

Classic by MKTO
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 9 (27/30)

The Readers’ Score: 9

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This was Ariana and Artyon’s ballroom dance this dance this season, and they did quite a respectable job! I liked the song, but it it doesn’t have a very ideal tempo for the Quickstep. Nonetheless, Brandon gave the kids some solid choreography that was classic, mature, and peppy! Sometimes that pep was a bit much for Ariana, though, which made her amazing energy backfire a bit when she did her quick runs. I also would have liked a little less gapping while in hold, but I understand why it was a bit open. Overall, though, this was an impressive routine, and it was perfect to showcase old Hollywood!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

Sky Brown and JT Church, Mentored by Alan Bersten
1920’s Charleston

A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got) by Fergie & Q-Tip & GoonRock
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 9 (27/30)

The Readers’ Score: 10

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: These Juniors are just so impressive! Sky and JT’s Charleston was definitely the dance of the night for me, and that’s saying something, since everybody really brought their A-game for this episode. Just like with Mackenzie, I think the judges were a bit harsh on Sky. Not a single 10? Really?! I looks like Alan challenged these two harder than he ever has before, and Sky handled it like a pro! The footwork was absolutely off the charts, and the overall 1920’s feel of this dance felt like a real party! This was such a phenomenal routine, and I honestly can’t get over how much I liked it!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 10

Time Machine Night Awards

Most Entertaining Dance: Sky and JT’s Charleston
Sky and JT’s Charleston was quick, classy, fun, and so many other adjectives! It captured the glamour of 1920’s partying like no other 20’s-themed performance on DWTS, which is hard to do, considering how many awesome performances like this we have had on the show before!

Best Costumes: Ariana and Artyon’s Quickstep Costumes
The costumes that Ariana and Artyon wore for their Quickstep were without a doubt my favorites! They looked so adorable and dapper in their classical formal wear! They were all dolled up, and I was all for it!

Best Choreography: Mandla and Cheryl’s Paso Doble
Cheryl gave Mandla and Cheryl some neat choreography for their Paso Doble that truly let them showcase their power and strength in movement. The part with the troupe towards the end was especially great, which was when Mandla was deep in the “zone,” and he was able to truly “attack” the choreography

Strongest Couple: Miles and Rylee
It’s as though Miles and Rylee were meant to dance with each other! When I watch these two, it’s hard to tell who is the celebrity and who is the pro! Not a single underwhelming dance from them!

Most Improved Child Celebrity: Sky Brown
Sky has proven so much as a dancer on DWTS: Juniors. Not only does she dance well for her age, but she dances well overall! Once I think she can’t top herself, she goes out and proves me wrong!

Stand-Out Moment of the Night: Miles’ 1950’s Knowledge
Who knew Miles knew so much about the 1950’s?! XD It was cool to see what things he knew about the decade. I especially liked how he brought up that frozen dinners were invented in this area, which made Lindsay rhetorically ask what they did before frozen dinners, and Miles simply said, “make dinner.” XD I love this kid!

Furthermore

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: It’s almost the end! The four child celebrities left are Miles, Mackenzie, Ariana, and Sky, and honestly, they have all proven worthy of the Mirror Ball Trophy! Mandla would have been a good Semi-Finalist, too, but as we all know, somebody has to go every week, and it is always hard to watch! I was originally skeptical about a Juniors season of Dancing With the Stars, but I ended up loving this season, and I can’t believe it’s almost over!
