Dancing With the Stars Season 22- Week 6 (Famous Dances Night) Breakdown [Bentley, Julia, and Angelina]

Well, it seems like all three of us had something different to say this week! But that’s why there are three bloggers for these breakdowns, right? Famous Dances Night had some iconic routines that replicated some of the best-loved routines on TV, on the big screen, in music videos, and on stage. Here are Bentley’s, Angelina’s, and Julia’s commentary on the show!

[Order of the Judges’ Scores: Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli]

Kim Fields and Sasha Farber
Jive: You Can’t Stop the Beat by the Glee Cast
Famous Dance: Scene from Hairspray
Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 8 (24/30)
#TeamKimsha 1(800)868-3406

Steller, stunning, spectacular, sexy-- those are only a few of a million words I would use to describe Kim this week. Overcoming a serious injury, and then performing a Jive of that quality? Phenomenal. Kim is by far the most improved celebrity of the season so far, and I think both she and Sasha should be commended for that. Kim was exceptionally gorgeous Monday night, and had sharp and peppy kicks and flicks to match. Seeing this dance makes me think that, if she has the votes, she can become a finalist. But did she have her breakout week too late? I’m not sure, but what I am sure about is that Kim was underscored. Period.

To me, this dance seemed a little simple for this time in the competition. It was fun to watch but nothing that really surprised me. It was clean technique-wise. Even though she had overcome an injury there not that many mistakes which is really good. As Julia says below, I would like to see another side of Kim because it’s not as fun to watch her dance as it was the first few times.

I was worried for Kim going into this dance because I’d heard about the stress fracture. It concerned me even more when we found out in the package that she straight-up ignored the doctor’s orders in preparing this routine. However, I did not notice any issues caused by her injury during the dance! Kim was as sharp and energetic as ever! However, it was kind of hard to see her for much of the routine. (I think there were a few too many troupe members in this number.) I did notice one small mistake and a tiny bit of steam lost towards the end, and she wasn’t quite as expressive as she normally is, but I still loved this performance! I would like to see a bit more variety in the “mood” of her performances, but that’s not her fault since most of the dances she has done so far have been upbeat styles. Next week she has the Samba, which is another one of those, and I’m disappointed by that because...I have a feeling it’s going to end up being her last dance (more on that below).

Bentley’s Score: 9
Angelina’s Score: 8
Julia’s Score: 8

Von Miller and Witney Carson
Jazz: Bad by Michael Jackson
Famous Dance: Bad Music Video
Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 8 (24/30)
#TeamBlondeMiller 1(800)868-3411

Von absolutely killed it. He had the recognizable Michael Jackson style, yet still made it his own. Von hit every move with okay power, but it lacked synchronicity with the troupe. Personally, I think Jazz should have a little more than just side-by-side, so I was a tad disappointed to see Witney just fade into the crowd. Nonetheless, Von shined. However, I have noticed that Von has a really spectacular performance one week, but then has a downfall the next. I have a feeling that next week will be one of his off weeks, which could be detrimental during the double elimination (even though next week’s scores count for week eight’s elimination).

I really liked Von’s dance this week. He brought so much energy to the floor. He didn’t really stand out as much as Julia says below, so I personally would’ve liked less troupe dances. Other than that amazing job but he needs to keep his energy level up and maybe more choreo with the partner?

It was so cute how excited Von was to be paying tribute to Michael Jackson this week! I think he did a great job with the routine but still didn’t hit the moves quite hard enough and didn’t really stand out among the troupe in his routine. (I also didn’t like that they put focus on tricks done by troupe members in this number.) But his facial expressions were amazing this week! The reaction to this dance is a prime example of why I don’t like this theme night very much. Obviously, the recreations of these dances are not going to live up to the originals in the eyes of most viewers, and with a dance as iconic and beloved as this one, it was inevitable that a lot of people would be vocal about the celebrity’s inability to live up to the hype. Von was definitely put in a tough spot here. I agree with Bentley that Von seems to be sort of a “yo-yo” in that he’ll have a great performance one week and a mediocre one the next. This week was probably his best yet, but I worry he’s fading away a bit. Maybe the jeopardy scare will wake people up to vote for him more, but I noticed the reaction to Paige being in jeopardy this week and Jodie being there the previous two elimination weeks seemed to enact much more of a response than Von’s position there did. I think he has a chance of being swept up in the double elimination on Monday, but I get the feeling the producers want to keep him around for at least one more week. Why? I’ll tell you later on...

Bentley’s Score: 8
Angelina’s Score: 8
Julia’s Score: 8

Jodie Sweetin and Keoikantse Motsepe
Contemporary: Try by P!nk
Famous Dance: Try Music Video
Judges’ Scores: 9, 8, 8 (25/30)
#TeamMoSweet 1(800)868-3405

This recreation of P!nk’s Try was seamlessly powerful, producing a high-class conflict between two bodies forming into one. The choreography was more than just ground-breaking. It was compiled to a story full of connection, and complete with fine finish. It felt as though Jodie was dragging herself at some points, but maybe that was due to her injury. I wish the camera angle was better on the one lift towards the end, because the lifts were the parts that stood out the most and told the most through unspoken words. This was one of Keo’s best choreographed routines so far, even though Jodie looked a bit impish. But when it all came together, Jodie placed an artistic touch on such a hectic, yet orderly routine.

I really liked her dance. She executed it beautiful. Many thinking that the heaviness or issues with the lifts were mistakes but they weren’t. If you have ever seen this routine you would know it should be heavy, it should be moving. I think this was a poor choice for a famous dance because I didn’t see it until after the show because originally I had agreed with speculators on her mistakes. I hope people give them a shot.

I had a feeling this routine wasn’t going to go very well, since Jodie had gotten hurt this week and it Contemporary, requiring more full-body expression than most other styles of dance. So I was surprised it was as great as it was, with Jodie using her entire body to tell this story. Her facial expressions were finally on point this week as well! The only thing that I noticed didn’t seem right was the execution of one of the lifts, but I think this was Jodie’s best dance yet! However, I’m kind of concerned some viewers might not have understood the story and what Jodie and Keo were trying to portray here. (It’s about relationship problems and the weight people carry from them, so the parts where the movements seemed “heavy” were intentional.) But since this isn’t as well-known a dance as some of the others tonight, Jodie had less to worry about in “living up to the hype” of the original than some other contestants. I think Jodie & Keo might be one of the couples going home next week, as they seem expendable in the eyes of the producers at this point, but I continue to see a lot of support for them around the internet so it’s kind of hard to tell. Hmmm...maybe Jodie is the Hayes Grier of the season...

Bentley’s Score: 8
Angelina’s Score: 9
Julia’s Score: 9

Paige VanZant and Mark Ballas
Famous Dance: Scene From Austin Powers
Judges’ Scores: 9, 10, 9 (28/30)
#PowRightInTheKisser 1(800)868-3410

All eyes on Paige! Paige stood out last night on the dance floor with her charm and sass implemented into a routine that could have easily become boring or awkward due to the instrumental song. But that was definitely not the case! Even with the changing of their dance style and song, Paige and Mark dominated that performance in a groovy and creative fashion. Mark as Austin Powers? Perfect. I appreciate the technical Jazz and Broadway steps and turns, but a lot of the performance was quite gimmicky. Either way, I found myself in love with such a ridiculous concept! And by the way, I always knew that Carrie Ann was Fook Yu in Austin Powers, but I always end up forgetting that for some reason. I guess Carrie Ann is just so different on the judging panel than in the movie!

I truthfully don’t have any complaints about this routine. Paige did a wonderful job with the dance and she had the most amazing facial expression that added into her dancing and fit with the character. Had they not shown or mentioned that they didn’t have much rehearsal time, I wouldn’t have wanted it to be more. I agree with Julia that it was sort of simple and basic, but overall very good.

This was my most highly-anticipated routine of the night. I knew “Soul Bossa Nova” was only a replacement but I love that someone got to do it and I was happy it was Paige & Mark since they have delivered really fun routines so far! (Though the Austin Powers theme may have been better-suited to a male celebrity since that character was obviously going to be the focus on the routine.) I thought the dance was good and I liked that it had a lot of jazz content but I was just slightly underwhelmed. It was executed wonderfully, but out of all the remaining couples Paige and Mark probably had the most creative freedom with their dance and it just seemed a bit simple and lacked that big (metaphorical) punch in the face I was expecting. But maybe my expectations were a bit too high for their limited rehearsal time. If they’d had all week to put this together I think it would have had that “punch”, but I still enjoyed the routine for what it was. This couple was put in jeopardy at the end of the night and while that could have been a ruse, it certainly makes me wonder if she is really getting as many votes as a lot of viewers might think she is...

Bentley’s Score: 9
Angelina’s Score: 9
Julia’s Score: 9

Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd
Quickstep: Hey! Pachuco by Royal Crown Revue
Famous Dance: Scene from The Mask
Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 9 (25/30)
#RedefiningDance 1(800)868-3409

That mask was scarily realistic! I find it absolutely amazing how the crew could cover Nyle’s ears without having to worry about him listening to the music! He was so in character that I didn’t even notice Peta! Nyle had all of the perfect mannerisms to portray The Mask, but that made him too scattered in both his upper body and footwork. His frame was not as broken as the judges made it out to be, but Nyle did lose some control. He does have to focus more on refinement now, but at least the sloppiness made for superb characterization.

It was an amazing routine. I have to agree with Len and Carrie Ann about the technical stuff they said but there was sloppiness because it fit with the character! They shouldn’t have mentioned it because it really goes into with the character and I thought it was done very well. I wouldn’t have chosen Quickstep with this song though, which may have added to the sloppy part.

So, um, remember two weeks ago when we were talking about Switch-Up possibilities and I said I was voting for Nyle to get Viennese Waltz over Quickstep? This is why. Quickstep is a difficult style to master in a week, and I had a feeling it was going to be especially difficult for Nyle because I figured the usual cues he gets from his partner during his routines would be hard to give and receive due to the speed and nature of the dance in general. I thought he might have gotten a bit of a lucky break getting it for this particular theme week since the rules were a lot more relaxed, but I think switching between being in and out of hold made this routine even more difficult for Nyle, and the out-of-hold sections were surprisingly the weakest parts of this dance. He was just sort of sloppy and off time. The in-hold sections were a little better, but his posture wasn’t that great. Also not helping them? The fact that they got The Mask, which is not only iconic in popular culture, but to Dancing With the Stars itself. “Hey! Pachuco” had been done by three different couples before this week’s episode, two of which are considered to be among the best routines in DWTS history, one of which got an Emmy. I was pretty sure they’d unofficially retired the song after the All-Stars season, but obviously that was not the case. I thought it was cool the finally had someone actually wearing the Mask (and that Peta’s dress sort of resembled Cameron Diaz’s from the film) and that the dance somewhat resembled the original for Famous Dance Night. (I don’t think they should have made it a Quickstep this time, though, since the dance in the movie is definitely NOT one. It should have just been labelled as “Jazz” or another dance style the film’s dance resembled more closely.) Nyle and Peta had a lot of factors working against them this week, and I haven’t even gotten to the package, which seemed to be a blatant attempt to turn people against Nyle, but I’ll talk more about that later...

Ginger Zee and Valentin Chmerkovskiy
Jazz: Nasty by Janet Jackson
Famous Dance: Nasty Music Video
Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 8 (24/30)
#TeamGinAndJuice 1(800)868-3404

Coming from a week where Ginger’s technique was on point, I was left wanted more after her tribute to Janet Jackson. She was in character for sure, but it was far too pedestrian for my liking. About half of the dance was Ginger walking from one side of the stage to the other, which was performed with strong execution, but it lacked any dynamic or advanced technicality. I know Ginger can do better this, but I need to see her really sell it for me to be blown away by her substantial capabilities.

When someone is constantly energetic and doing very well you begin to get high expectations from them, but this week Ginger didn’t really meet them at all. There needs to be less walking around the stage and more dancing, more showing off what you have. Week 6 has just passed and this is not the time to start slowing down.

When it was announced Ginger was doing this dance I thought she was going to bomb. Later in the week, when I watched her rehearsal clips on Instagram, I was sure she was going to kill it. I guess she ended up somewhere in between, but for the first time this season, I think she deserved more credit than she got. She hit every move expertly, and brought a lot of power to the dance. I do think that this routine didn’t have enough actual dancing in it, but I don’t blame Ginger or Val for that seeing as they were told to copy the original music video. I also agree with the judges that she wasn’t quite “nasty” enough and that she sort of seemed like a cheerleader during this performance, but I think she had a good combination of sex appeal and her own style. I think this couple could possibly be in danger of going home next week, but then again last season I was saying the same thing about Tamar-who got even more backlash from the audience than Ginger has been getting. And if the producers are as keen on keeping this couple around for awhile as a lot of people think, they probably would have been put in jeopardy if there was some sign of danger for them. But maybe there is and they’ve just given up on favoring them. If nothing else, I think Val’s fanbase should probably be able to pull them through until at least Week 8, though I have seen quite a few comments from people claiming to be huge Val fans saying they’re not voting for Ginger...

Doug Flutie and Karina Smirnoff Eliminated (9th Place)
Bollywood: Jai Ho by The Pussycat Dolls and A.R. Rahman
Famous Dance: Scene from Slumdog Millionaire
Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 7 (21/30) Bottom of the Leaderboard
#TeamKutie 1(800)868-3402

Some of you on Twitter (especially @mc54_mc)  have informed me about what traditional Bollywood dancing looks like (because I am not too familiar with western dances), and you have showed me that Bollywood is a lot more fluid than it is usually portrayed in America. And, after looking at a Bollywood video sent to me, I found out what you guys have been talking about. However, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Bollywood somewhat like Jazz in the sense that there are different variations of it? I’m not sure. . . I’m an uncultured swine (JK LOL). But anyway, Doug freakin’ nailed this. I remember Karina’s Hip Hop with Apolo Anton Ohno in season 15, which was a foreign style to her typical dances, and she did a really good job with it; same goes for this Bollywood routine. I agree with Carrie Ann that Doug actually felt this dance throughout his body, which I have been waiting to see for weeks now. Obviously he lacks technique, but does anyway actually care? He was fun to watch with his glowing personality and dedication to the show. Now that he is out, I feel like the competition has become a whole lot tighter, but I would be lying if I said I won’t miss seeing him on the dance floor next week!

I’m glad he had an amazing run on DWTS and he really did. There were ups and downs and it was great getting to know him. Wasn’t really surprised about this elimination because lately he hasn’t been at his full potential but that is okay too! We love you Doug, thanks for sharing this with us!

I thought Doug wasn’t going to be very good at Bollywood, but while this was my least favorite routine of the night, he did a lot better than I expected him to! He stayed on time and looked like he was truly enjoying himself, which made this his best performance of the season! I do think this was probably Doug’s time to go (although I’d have rather seen a certain other football player go over him) and I’m glad he got to leave on a positive note.

Wanyá Morris and Lindsay Arnold
Jazz: Bye Bye Bye by NSYNC
Famous Dance: Bye Bye Bye Performance by NSYNC on the 2000 VMAs
Judges’ Scores: 10, 9, 10 (29/30) Top of the Leaderboard
#TeamYayZee 1(800)868-3412

Now that is what I call a Jazz routine! There was side-by-side, there was interaction with Lindsay, there was more than just walking, there was a fragrant sense of style that shone throughout the routine from start to finish. This Boyz II Men star has been converted to NSYNC, and he couldn’t have portrayed it any better! This was not just a performance to do what everyone else did; Lindsay’s genius choreography allowed Wanyá to stand out in a way that resembled something recognizable, but not in an impersonation fashion. It was perfect. 10.

I liked his energy but didn’t think he was very fitting into the role. Sometimes out of sync with the troupe members. I loved it but not my favorite dance of the night. They brought some tricks and fun to the stage while perfecting the steps. I don’t know how to explain it in words, but it didn’t do it for me.

I liked this routine a lot! Wanyá and Lindsay are always fun and that attitude suited this number perfectly. Wanyá hit the dance moves expertly and it was so great to see Lance Bass and Joey fatone supporting him! The only thing that bothered me just a little was the fact that Wanyá wasn’t always in sync with the screen during that but at the beginning of the routine. But this was definitely my favorite dance of the night!

Antonio Brown and Sharna Burgess
Jive: Footloose by Kenny Loggins
Famous Dance: Scene from Footloose
Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 9 (27/30)
#TeamBOOMin 1(800)868-3401

From the silver screen to the ballroom, Antonio rocked the house with this high-energy closing number! Antonio has come a long way from week one, showing more variety in his steps than ever before! There could have been a few more basic link steps, and a little less fluff. But I still loved the minimal amount of Jive content that Sharna put into the dance. Antonio sometimes executes his lines a little too stiff and straight, which has been recurring since week two for him. Besides that, I think was the perfect, bright and shiny performance to end the night! The question is, will Antonio be able to live up to the hype in weeks ahead?

It began with their package...where do I start. I completely disagree with Antonio. Sharna probably didn’t think it through, but she said that only because he hasn’t been recently dedicated to DWTS. It wasn’t fair how he’s treated Sharna lately. His dance was really good! It shows that he has put more rehearsal into his dances lately. I wish he would’ve changed his facial expression a bit more

In the interest of keeping things focused, I’ll only talk about the dance and my predictions for next week here and save the rest for later. This was Antonio’s best dance yet! The Jive really suited his energy and he did great with the kicks and flicks for the most part. (Though I saw a couple I instance when he didn’t point his toes!) I did notice that he messed up a little during the beginning and that he really needs to emote more during his performances. I get that this was an upbeat and “happy” dance but Antonio definitely could have shown a little more variety in his facial expressions. Instead, we got that same smile that seems to be plastered to his face no matter what he does. Also, there wasn’t a lot of Jive content here but as I said with Ginger’s dance I know the pros were instructed to copy the original performance (though I do recall a lot more dancing in this scene in Footloose, even if it wasn’t all Jive content). I think this couple will be safe this week thanks to Antonio finally putting more work into rehearsals (among...other factors) but I’m we’ll soon see if this new work ethic proves to be a permanent thing for Antonio...

Some Other Thoughts We Had On Famous Dances Night

- I saw Mischa in the audience, and she looked like a totally different person! She seems genuinely happy, and not with a fake smile that she had on her short-lived time on the show! I think with the stress of people judging her on the show off of her, she is finally able to breathe. Good for her! And by the way, she is not dating Artem! XD

- I loved seeing Mischa in the audience and on All Access! I’m glad she has found joy from being a part of Dancing With the Stars in some form. They gave her a collar for her dog and it looks so cute on her!
ChK2xZJU0AA3Lu0.jpg

- I also loved seeing DWTS alumni Marissa Janet Winkour, Kyle Massey, and Michael Sam back in the ballroom this week, not only as part of the audience, but as part of the set for Nyle and Peta’s Quickstep!

- Yes! I said to myself, “Wait a minute. . . Is that Michael Sam? And Kyle Massey? [I didn’t notice Marissa right away.] Oh my God, I love them!” I still think Michael Sam should have made it further in season 20. He is a nice guy. . . Just saying. XD

- This season I’ve started “taking the temperature” of the general audience by reading comments on the official Dancing With the Stars Facebook page. It’s interesting to see what the average viewer buys into and what they know is BS. I was pleasantly surprised that a lot of them have seemed to see through the Ginger “pimping” by ABC. However, they seem to have bought the propaganda the producers spit out at us this week hook, line, and sinker. I knew some people would turn against Nyle after the comments about aspiring to match Val and how he doesn’t see the other celebrities as his competition in his package this week (and really, Len blew the comments about Val way out of proportion during his critique of Nyle’s dance) but I’m not sure how big or small an impact it had on his votes this week. I get the feeling the producers want a pro who hasn’t won yet to get the trophy, but I’m also wondering if they did this because Nyle is killing it in the votes and they wanted to level the playing field a bit, or at least make things look to be a little more even and unpredictable.

- I’d heard Antonio spent a long time ranting about Sharna between last week and this week, which was followed by a team meeting and new game plan, so I was expecting a package of him acknowledging his mistakes and redeeming himself for them. He did get a sympathetic edit, but instead of highlighting Antonio’s growth from his mishaps the producers decided to throw Sharna under the bus and make it look like she was the one not fully committed to the partnership. And even after last week’s package centered around Antonio being frequently late to practice and unfocused on rehearsals, I was surprised at how many people turned against Sharna just for her prediction that someone other than Antonio would win it. I don’t think she said anything terrible but a lot of people seemed to think she was way out of line for saying a partnership other than her own would come out on top. And she wasn’t even the only one who said that! It just makes me sad to see Sharna getting attacked while Antonio got portrayed at the poor, innocent victim in all this. I’m not sure if it got more people on the Team Boomin’ bandwagon, but I think it probably convinced some who were debating switching their support to another couple to stick with them despite Antonio’s poor behaviour.

- Next week is Musical Icons Night, which is a bit underwhelming, considering we just had Famous Dances Night. But who knows? Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised. It would be fitting to have a Prince number, but I think it is unlikely to clear a Prince song so quickly. There are many musical icons that I love that the couples will be portraying next week, so it will be interesting to see how they represent these game-changing musicians!

- I really hope they just have the couples dance to the original track without making them emulate the singer of their assigned song. I grew tired of the comparisons to the original very quickly this week so I think it’d be best to just let the pairs create their own piece using the music they are given for Week 7.

- The team dances for next week are going to be women vs men (so elementary, LOL). SO that means the teams are Kim & Sasha, Jodie & Keo, Paige & Mark, and Ginger & Val against Von & Witney, Nyle & Peta, Wanyá & Lindsay, and Antonio & Sharna. For the Musical Icons theme, the women are dancing a tribute to Beyoncé, and the men are doing a tribute to James Brown. I have a feeling that because of the high level of competition left, both teams are going to do really well. I can’t stand Beyoncé in the slightest (just my opinion), so that’s going to be a bit unfortunate for me as a viewer when I watch the women’s dance. James Brown, on the other hand, will be an interesting one to replicate for the men’s team dance. I can’t wait to see what each team has to bring, though! I don’t know, what do you guys think?

- Not sure who will win, but I have a feeling they might have the men’s dance close off the night and then declare the whole team safe (if that is the case).

- I knew a double elimination was going to coming up sooner or later! I feel like next week’s elimination is one of the hardest eliminations to predict in a long time! I keep changing my mind about what I think will happen, but my guess is that Kim will be in eighth, and Von will be in seventh. I basing this off of who I think is getting the least amount of votes, but I think the votes this season are a complete crapshoot!

- We’re at the point where everyone is phenomenal on the dance floor. My rankings were nearly impossible to make because I gave a 10, four 9s, three 8s, and a 7 (which the 7 I gave was to the eliminated couple)! I don’t think we’ve seen competition this good since season 17! Anyone can be going home next week, especially with the double elimination. The only ones that I think are probably safe from elimination next week (for real, not the show’s version of safety) are Nyle and Wanyá, and most likely Paige as well.

- I agree one of the contestants eliminated on Monday is probably going to be Kim. I think she is disposable in the eyes of the producers so I don’t see them doing anything to try to keep her around. And I don’t really see a lot of talk about her, at least not in the areas where the general audience tends to lurk.

- As for the other, I think it will be either Ginger, Jodie, or Von. Ginger and Von are both tied the bottom of the leaderboard with Kim, and Jodie is only one point ahead of them (so is Nyle, but I think despite the package controversy he’s probably still getting more votes than all four of them so I expect he will be safe on Monday). As I said earlier I think the producers are expecting Ginger to be safe this week but they could be in for a bit of a surprise if she didn’t get a lot of votes. Jodie has been in jeopardy twice-I’m guessing to make sure she outlasted Doug, but, like Kim, I think she is now expendable in the eyes of the producers. I’ve seen a lot of people saying they are voting for her, but people said the same thing about Hayes Grier last season and he came in 8th place. They put Von in jeopardy this week, which makes me think they want him to stick around for Week 8. I’m guessing that’s possibly because they might bring back the challenge where two couple dance together and if so they are probably just dying to have the two remaining NFL stars dance together (and then maybe have them be in jeopardy at the end of the show). It might have helped him get enough votes to stick around, but I noticed that there really didn’t seem to be much of a response to him being in jeopardy like there was for Paige as well as Jodie both times she was there. That could be very telling, but if someone else’s fans were complacent this week then that person could be going home.
