DWTS Season 27 - Week 3 (Most Memorable Year Night) Dance Overviews

It’s the night that lets the audience get to know all of the celebrities better—Most Memorable Year Night! On Monday, October 8, we saw the couples show their vulnerable sides with emotional life stories. And at the end of the show, we saw the third elimination of the season.

With thoughts on the night of performances on the DWTS Interact blog, here is Paul Bentley, along with The Readers’ Scores, which were very close this time around!

Most Memorable Year Night Dances

The remaining eleven couples told the stories of the most memorable years of their lives, and performed a dance in honor of it. And at the end of the night, another couple was eliminated from the competition.

[Order of the Judges’ Scores: Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli]

Mary Lou Retton and Sasha Farber
Viennese Waltz

We Are the Champions by Ray Chew Live
Mary Lou’s Most Memorable Year: 1984, When She Won a Gold Medal at the Olympics
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 8 (24/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Mary Lou has so much agility, and the fact that she was able to win the gold at the Olympics six weeks after getting knee surgery exemplifies that. Winning a gold medal at the Olympics is hard enough; doing so with an injury is on a whole other level. Just like with her Waltz the week before, Mary Lou did a respectable job with this week’s Viennese Waltz. And this time, I think she managed to show even more grace. She wobbled a bit in her open position whisks, but she gained her balance back again in hold. Sasha gave her a good variety of choreography, especially out of hold, and it really allowed us to see all the intricacies that she has been working on these past few weeks. This was a beautiful performance, and I feel as though it was underscored.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

Milo Manheim and Witney Carson
Jive

Can You Do This by Aloe Blacc
Milo’s Most Memorable Year: 2018, When His Life Started to Change in His Acting Career
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 9 (27/30)

The Readers’ Score: 9

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: For someone who has only experienced life for seventeen years, Milo has accomplished a lot, and it’s cool that he doesn’t take any of that for granted. His graduation-themed Jive was so much fun, and Milo made it look easy! Witney gave Milo some really difficult tricks, but Milo did them like they were nothing! He is so light on his feet! If I were to nitpick, though, I would say that Milo needs to point toes and bring his shoulders back just a tad bit. Other than that, this was a nice change of pace for the night, full of youthful energy and that star quality that we have been seeing grow in Milo since the beginning!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

Nancy McKeon and Val Chmerkovskiy
Rumba

Love Someone by Lukas Graham
Nancy’s Most Memorable Year: 2006, When Her Family Became Complete
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 7, 7 (22/30)

The Readers’ Score: 7

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This was a wholesome dance for a wholesome story. Nancy is just a regular mother who loves her family, and it’s great to see the authenticity of her story about them. As for Rumba, I thought she actually had some pretty good technique. Maybe not as good as compared to some other celebrities this season, but it showed progression in her journey on this show. The execution of her side steps alone show that she has been working on some of the things that she needed to improve from her Cha-Cha-Cha last week. The dance was a bit static at times, though, and I thought we missed out on some stronger hip action. In the end, this showed growth, so it’s good that she ended on a high note before being eliminated this week.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7

Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten
Contemporary

How to Save a Life by Ray Chew Live
Alexis’ Most Memorable Year: 2014, When Her Mother Died from Cancer
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 8, 9 (26/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: I feel for Alexis. Cancer is such a terrible thing to experience for families, and losing a parent at such a young age is absolutely gutting. She held it together after watching her video package for her Contemporary, but she still emitted that raw emotion into her performance. Minus some “whipping” from one section to another, Alexis showed immense delicacy. Just like with her Argentine Tango last week, the lifts were precise really great, and this time around, she was more delicate and stable off her feet. Alexis and Alan’s chemistry is growing every week, and that is making me more invested in this couple.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

#TeamRenTen 1(800)868-3401

Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe
Viennese Waltz

Hedwig’s Theme by John Williams
Evanna’s Most Memorable Year: 2006, When She Was Cast in Harry Potter
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 9 (27/30)

The Readers’ Score: 9

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: It is so cool that Evanna was able to be a part of a movie based off of a book series that means so much to her! The Harry Potter theme song that they used for this Viennese Waltz was really whimsical, and Evanna was fully immersed it it. Evanna had beautiful legwork in this performance, and she kept up with Keo’s fast-paced choreography with a sense of ease. After she got into shadow position with Keo in the middle, though, things became hectic in her shoulders, where she was indicating the music too much in her upper body. I am loving watching this couple every week, and I hope they continue this upward trajectory so we can continue seeing these stand-out performances from them!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

#TeamKevanna 1(800)868-3405

Joe Amabile and Jenna Johnson
Viennese Waltz

You Are the Reason by Calum Scott and Leona Lewis
Joe’s Most Memorable Year: 2018, When He Met His Partner Kendall
The Judges’ Scores: 6, 6, 6 (18/30)

The Readers’ Score: 7

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Another bachelor with another most memorable year about meeting his love… It’s a bit repetitive, but I guess it’s a cute story. But unfortunately, as much as I liked the atmosphere of his Viennese Waltz, Joe just didn’t deliver as well as a contestant should at this point of the competition. He just doesn’t do well with the small details of ballroom dances, and when so many small details are off, the entire dance looks off. He has very poor stability throughout his entire body, but at least he looked invested in the performance, so it’s good that he’s trying. I just want Joe to hit his “aha” moment to where he can be more of a leading man for Jenna, because at this point, Jenna is doing most of the work.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6

Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke
Samba

Ni TĂș Ni Yo by Jennifer Lopez featuring Gente de Zona
Juan Pablo’s Most Memorable Year: 1999, When He Moved from Buenos Aires
The Judges’ Scores: 10, 10, 10 (30/30)

The Readers’ Score: 10

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Juan Pablo’s video package finally made me feel a connection with him, which felt missing from the previous weeks. And his Samba was an absolute breakthrough for him! He brought that same Latin flair he had in his week one Salsa, but this time, it was amplified! When it comes to the Latin styles, he feels the music throughout his whole body! He had the timing and bounce of the Samba down, and it all came together for one hell of a performance! He and Cheryl were hotter and than they’ve ever been, and it all came together with a nice polish. This was surely deserving of the first tens and the first perfect score of the season!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 10

#TeamChernando 1(800)868-3408

John Schneider and Emma Slater
Jive

Smile by Ray Chew Live
John’s Most Memorable Year: 2016, When He Lost “Everything”
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 7 (21/30)

The Readers’ Score: 7

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Being from the Jersey Shore, I know how devastating a simple storm can be, and being that John lost his mother the same year he faced the devastation of a flood, that has got to be rough. I loved seeing this lighter side of John in Waltz. He showed expression to his fullest potential, using his facial expressions alone to tell his story. His hold has improved since his Foxtrot, even though his shoulders and elbows are still too loose. John and Emma performed stunningly, and although I would have personally given it a seven, I wouldn’t have minded them earning an eight or two!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7

#TeamSuperDuke 1(800)868-3407

Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess
Contemporary

A Million Dreams by Malachi Barton
Bobby’s Most Memorable Year: 1998, When He Graduated High School
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 7, 8 (23/30)

The Readers’ Score: 7

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Oh man, Bobby’s story was definitely the emotional to me. It actually made me a little choked up when he talked about his rough childhood. And that singing from Malachi Barton made it that much more emotional. The way Sharna crafted this Contemporary piece was so artistic and genius, especially with the book at the end. Seeing Bobby vulnerable and open made me like him even more than I already did. Although still a bit chaotic with how he was ahead of Sharna for a few bars, he was a lot calmer this time around, which was quite refreshing. It wasn’t the most complicated performance ever, but it was nice… and it was my favorite performances of the night. If Bobby were in any danger of being eliminated soon, I think this might have been Bobby’s turning point, and he could stay on the show longer than I thought.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8

#TeamBeautyAndTheGeek 1(800)868-3402

Tinashe and Brandon Armstrong
Rumba

2 On by Tinashe
Tinashe’s Most Memorable Year: 2014, When She Released Her Debut Album
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 9 (27/30)

The Readers’ Score: 9

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Tinashe is a stellar performer with many talents, but I love how she is also grounded and authentic at the same time. In her video package, she felt very appreciative and happy of everything, and I feel like I got to know her as more than just a fantastic dancer. Her Rumba had a nice blend of fast and slow, and excellent hipwork on top of that. As much as I think Tinashe and Brandon are one of the strongest pairs this season, though, I feel like they are a bit underrated. It seems like not enough people are talking about them, and that’s making me think that they might be eliminated earlier than the general audience might think. But hopefully I’m wrong. Tinashe has proven that she can slay any Latin dance you throw at her, whether it be fast or slow. Now, I look forward to see what she brings for her ballroom dance next week!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

#TeamFireAndFlames 1(800)868-3413

DeMarcus Ware and Lindsay Arnold
Argentine Tango

Lux Aeterna by Clint Mansell and Kronos Quartet
DeMarcus’ Most Memorable Year: 2016, When He Won the Superbowl
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 8, 9 (26/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: DeMarcus seems like the perfect family man! He clearly cares so much about his family, and it’s nice to see him talking about them as the most important things in his life. Now about his Argentine Tango: That performance was absolutely jaw-dropping! When he did the dead lift with Lindsay at the beginning and then whipped her around his arms like it was nothing, I audibly said, “wow!” This is some of the best choreography that Lindsay has ever done, and this just shows why she is probably the best pro this show has to offer. I thought this dance was criminally underscored. DeMarcus captured the essence of the Argentine Tango perfectly, demonstrating delicate strength and a connection to both Lindsay and the dance. It was absolutely phenomenal. This is so far the performance of the season for me!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 10

Most Memorable Year Night Awards

Most Entertaining Dance: Bobby and Sharna’s Contemporary
The bedroom setup, Sharna’s brilliant choreography, Bobby’s vulnerability and dedication to the dance, and the kid singing made this Contemporary performance memorable and truly emotional. I don’t think I’ve gotten this choked up from a dance on this show in a very long time.

Best Costumes: Tinashe and Brandon’s Rumba Costumes
Tinashe looked absolutely stunning in that purple costume. She looked so beautiful and classy! And although his outfit was simple, Brandon looked good, too.

Best Choreography: DeMarcus and Lindsay’s Argentine Tango
What else could I say? Lindsay creates groundbreaking choreography every single season, and she is not afraid to take any risks, especially when it comes to those insane lifts. And those risks pay off!

Strongest Couple: Juan Pablo and Cheryl
Juan Pablo and Cheryl absolutely nailed that Samba this week. They had a stronger connection than ever, and Juan Pablo let the music take over his body!

Most Improved Celebrity: Bobby Bones
After being a bit too chaotic in his performances at the beginning of this season, Bobby finally settled down and gave us something different from high energy and humor. On Monday night, he improved in more ways than one.

Stand-Out Moment of the Night: Bobby’s Most Memorable Year Story
Bobby clearly had a rough childhood, and hearing his story really struck a note with me. I am sure that many people in the audience can relate to his situation, and I am sure that he inspired those who might have given up with the cards they were dealt with in life.

Furthermore

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Most Memorable Year Night is always an emotional night, which I always appreciate because of how much the stars open up, but now I’m ready for things to be a little more upbeat for next week. I love so many of the celebrities coming back for the trio round! As far as the elimination goes, I think John, Mary Lou, and Joe are in the most danger. And if I were a gambling man, I’d say Mary John is the next to go, unfortunately. I don’t think any of these people are necessarily “forgettable,” but they seemed to be overshadowed by some other performances during the night.
