DWTS Season 27 - Week 4 (Trio Night) Dance Overviews

For the first time ever on the shoe’s run, Dancing With the Stars did the trio dances round for the ten remaining couples in week four. The episode aired on Monday, October 15, and featured the fourth elimination of the season.

As always, you, The Readers, voted on what scores you would give the dances, and there was one dance in particular that you all didn’t seem to like very much! XD So, along with your scores, here are Paul Bentley’s thoughts on the night of performances.

Trio Night Dances

The ten remaining couples joined other celebrities (some of which were former Dancing With the Stars contestants) for trio dances. And at the end of the night, another couple was eliminated from the competition.

[Order of the Judges’ Scores: Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli]

Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke, featuring Melissa Rycroft
Cha-Cha-Cha

Wavey by CLiQ featuring Alika
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 8 (24/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: While I do think Melissa was a solid addition for this trio Cha-Cha-Cha, the dance felt a lot more like everyone “feeling themselves,” rather than dancing “with” each other. It’s no question that Juan Pablo has rhythm and saucy hip action, but he lacked chemistry with Cheryl and Melissa. And I know that dance style rules are a little more relaxed for trio dances, but I think these three could have benefited from more in hold and “feeding off of each other.” I probably sound very critical of this dance, but I’m just analyzing it for what it was. I actually thought it was a bit underscored, considering there really wasn’t much technically wrong about it, from what I noticed.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

Tinashe and Brandon Armstrong, featuring Amy Purdy
Tango

Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar from Rock of Ages
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 8, 9 (26/30)

The Readers’ Score: 9

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Brandon is a choreographic genius! He managed to take a difficult task of doing a trio ballroom dance and turned it into a genuinely great number, all while keeping in mind Amy’s limitations with her prosthetic legs. It was fun and snappy in all the right ways, giving everyone in this Tango a chance to shine! I loved everything from the hold to the solo sections, even though I there was a bit of gapping between Tinashe and Brandon when Tinashe was behind him while he was in hold with Amy. And being that I consider Tinashe to be one of the best celebrity dancers this season, I was absolutely gutted that she was eliminated. Being that she had a relatively high score and was still eliminated over someone like Joe (who was eleven points below her), she really must have not been getting a lot of votes. I had a feeling that Tinashe wasn’t standing out enough, but I didn’t realize she would be out in week four! And in my opinion, this elimination is even worse than some of the other early exits of great dancers we’ve had before because Tinashe seems like such an awesome person who seemed to genuinely care about everyone and be invested in the dance. Even after reading mean comments about her online and being in jeopardy two times in a row, she still smiled through and left the ballroom with class. Brandon has also become one of my favorite pros in his short run this season. His choreography is just so refreshing! Tinashe and Brandon were the definition of class and are overall good people, so just like with Danelle’s elimination in week two, I was bummed out over this.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

John Schneider and Emma Slater, featuring Joey Fatone
Argentine Tango

Torn by Nathan Lanier
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 7 (21/30)

The Readers’ Score: 7

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: And Emma does it again! I love how she is able to adapt to her partners’ skill sets, giving them content that would best work for them, while still creating a hell of a performance! From partners like Billy Dee Williams to Rashad Jennings, she is able to turn non-dancers in dancer, which is why she tends to last a while, even when her partners are not the most musically talented. John was in the zone for this Argentine Tango, and even though Joey hadn’t been on the dance floor in a long time, he complimented John’s dance style respectably well. John had his usual polish problems, as well as some stutters in the beginning, but the judges really ripped this performance apart. I feel like this was a very underscored performance, especially considering that I’d say this was John’s best dance yet—a breakthrough, even! John and Joey were quite the actors in this performance, and Jo0hn in particular really felt the intensity of the style. After this performance, I would really hate seeing this couple being the ones eliminated next week, if that does end up being the case!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8

Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe, featuring Scarlett Byrne
Salsa

Black Magic by Little Mix
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 8 (24/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Scarlett might not be experienced with dancing, which was evident in this Salsa, but as the judges said, she matched Evanna’s style really well. It was just a fun, feel-good routine that showed yet another dimension to Evanna’s dancing. I appreciate Keo putting in a nice variety of steps for his partners this week, which made both of the girls shine! At times, I thought Evanna was a bit “steppy,” but that’s about it. This was another performance that I feel like was underscored! Seeing Evanna and Keo in jeopardy this week was a bit concerning, but with Tinashe and Brandon out, maybe some of the Tinashe voters are going to vote for Evanna now… hopefully. I think the eliminations and jeopardy announcements this season have been a bit of a wakeup call for viewers, but will it be enough to keep us from having any more “shocking” eliminations?
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

#TeamKevanna 1(800)868-3405

DeMarcus Ware and Lindsay Arnold, featuring Rashad Jennings
Paso Doble

Fire by Barns Courtney
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 8 (22/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Many people have voiced their opinions about this Paso Doble being underscored, but this was actually a dance that I thought received a fair score. Don’t get me wrong, I still think DeMarcus is one of the best dancers of the season, and he and Rashad brought the heat for this number, but it just fell flat a bit when it came to technique. Just like with Rashad’s Samba in season 24, it was a good dance in itself, but when the dance style is concerned, it falls a bit short. DeMarcus needed more shaping and refinement in how he circles his arms. This dance is just a bump in the road, though, and I think DeMarcus and Lindsay will be back higher on the scoreboard next week!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7

Mary Lou Retton and Sasha Farber, featuring Nastia Liukin
Charleston

V.E.S.P.A by Dimie Cat
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 8, 9 (26/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: While I still think ballroom styles are Mary Lou’s strong point, she’s still amazing when it comes to styles like the Charleston! Mary Lou was worried about matching up to the youthful Nastia, but she did a commendable job in doing so. I still Mary Lou is still a little too “gymnasty” when it comes to flow and transitions, but she was hard-hitting, poised, and paying attention to all the small details! Sasha has been consistently giving Mary Lou challenging choreography, but it doesn’t seem to phase her in the slightest! This was such an enjoyable dance, complete with a stellar 100% from everyone involved!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

#TeamStickIt 1(800)868-3409

Milo Manheim and Witney Carson, featuring Riker Lynch
Salsa

Adrenalina by Wisin featuring Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez
The Judges’ Scores: 10, 9, 10 (29/30)

The Readers’ Score: 10

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Oh, how I love a well-executed Salsa trio! I loved the addition of Riker (my favorite season 20 contestant) in this performance; he dances so much like Milo, and the two of them played off of each other with Witney exceptionally well. Milo was quick, light on his feet, and better than he has ever been on that dance floor! I have to disagree with Len about the lack of hip movement, because there was plenty of it! I just love this performance… it might just be my favorite of the season so far! Milo has been a powerhouse since week one, but now with his experience of dancing, he is becoming likely candidate for the Mirrorball! Can we get an encore of this Salsa, please? XD
Paul Bentley’s Score: 10

#TeamWitlo 1(800)868-3410

Joe Amabile and Jenna Johnson, featuring Jordan Kimball
Salsa

I’m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred
The Judges’ Scores: 5, 5, 5 (15/30)

The Readers’ Score: 1

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Well, I am pretty sure this is the first time someone on the blog has given somebody a 1 for a performance (even lower than the 2’s for Geraldo Rivera in season 22)! Way to go, Readers! XD Umm, this dance was… fascinating. But not in a good way. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it, but in the way like it’s hard to keep your eyes off of a car accident. It was terribly cringey. I commend Jenna for trying to make the best out of this trio by trying to make it sexy, but Joe and Jordan were just way too cringey for it to be taken seriously. Both Joe and Jordan made several mistakes, and it was overall just a disaster. But we got that Joe Amabile smile again, so… yeah. The highlight of this dance for me was Gleb using a wrench to penetrate a tire Val is holding in the background. Everything else was just… I don’t even know. I have no words. The fact that Joe and Jenna got such a low score yet still survived elimination just shows how strong Joe’s fan base is, which means Joe could last a whole lot longer! But with Tinashe waking up the viewing audience to vote, I wonder if that fan base will be put to the test next week.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 5

Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten, featuring Maddie Ziegler
Tango

Move Your Body by Sia
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 9 (25/30)

The Readers’ Score: 10

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: First of all, I just want to say that I thought the colorful lights at the beginning were pretty cool. but once the music dropped, the lights were just way too much. I hate flashing lights like that, and I can’t be the only one who did not like that addition. Anyway, I thought this Tango was innovative with Alan’s choreography and the way Alexis and Maddie were able to balance each other out in hold, despite large gapping on Maddie’s part. Alexis also had a weird claw thing going on with her hand out of hold, which I never really noticed from her before. This Tango was filled with lots of creative content, and it came together in a kind of artistic way.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

#TeamRenTen 1(800)868-3401

Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess, featuring Lindsey Stirling
Cha-Cha-Cha

U Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 6, 7 (20/30)

The Readers’ Score: 6

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Although I l do like to see the jokester side of Bobby, I wanted to see him stray from that a bit this week. His Contemporary last week was a nice breakthrough from him, and it was so refreshing to see more than just a wild Bobby acting crazy on the dance floor. This trio Cha-Cha-Cha was some more of that humor we’ve seen from him, which is fine, but I want something a little more dynamic going forward. Just like his performances from the first two weeks, this was a bit of a mess, but less of one. I love the energy he gives, but it makes him lose refinement in his dancing. Lindsey and Sharna came out and just had fun with the performance with Bobby, so at least the energy, despite messy on Bobby’s part, was well-matched! XD

Trio Night Awards

Most Entertaining Dance: Milo, Witney, and Riker’s Salsa
This dance was like a party, which reminds me of how fun Calvin, Lindsay, and Witney’s trio Salsa from season 23. Milo, Witney, and Riker all played an intrical part of this routine, and it made for a performance that I believe should have gotten a perfect score!

Best Costumes: DeMarcus. Lindsay, and Rashad’s Paso Doble Costumes
Although simple, DeMarcus and Rashad’s costumes exemplified the athleticism in their bodies, and was a nice contrast of black and white, which were put together nicely in Lindsay’s costume.

Best Choreography: Tinashe, Brandon, and Amy’s Tango
Brandon had been nailing it all season with his choreography, and this trio Tango showcased how he is able to turn a challenge into something he can use to his advantage. I loved the courtroom story with Tinashe and Amy, especially with the sections of them leaning on the tables!

Strongest Couple: Evanna and Keo
This wasn’t necessarily Evanna and Keo’s best dance, but it still showed how connected they are as a couple (and with Scarlett), and that Evanna is still on an upward trajectory to improving her already great technique!

Most Improved Celebrity: Milo Manheim
Milo has been energetic and impressive from the start, but now he is getting a better feel for dance as a whole, and he has been making his performances look effortless!

Stand-Out Moment of the Night: DeMarcus’ Finger Injury
Ouch! Seeing that nasty finger dislocation from DeMarcus made me cringe even more than Joe’s Salsa. Oh, and that crunching sound from when it was moved back into place? My goodness. I think just about everyone reacted audibly to that with some sort of “yikes!” reaction.

Furthermore

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: So the most obvious outrage from the night was from Tinashe’s elimination. It sucks to see her go, but the votes speak louder than social media, I guess. So what do we think is going to happen with the elimination next week? We started with seven female contestants and six male contestants this season, and we have so far lost four females and zero males, meaning that there are twice as many men left than women. So is it time for a man to go? If so, I would say Joe is next to leave, but after seeing how much support he gets from his fan base even after his low scores, I think he has the capabilities of lasting at least another week, leaving someone like maybe John (who I believe was underscored) to be the next one out. But if yet another woman is eliminated, I think Evanna could still be in trouble, and maybe even Alexis, since it doesn’t seem like people don’t talk about this as much as the rest. The only thing I am confident about saying is that I think Milo, DeMarcus, Mary Lou, Juan Pablo, and Bobby are likely to stay. But who even knows at this point?
