DWTS Season 27 - Week 1, Night 2 (Premiere) Dance Overviews

The second night of the season 27 premiere of Dancing With the Stars on Tuesday, September 25 surprised us all as they announced that only the couples in jeopardy of elimination would have to perform their dances for the night! So, only five couples dances, followed by the first elimination of the season! Plus, the cast of Dancing With the Stars: Juniors was announced! We also got an encore dance of DeMarcus and Lindsay’s Cha-Cha-Cha, as well as a special singing performance from Mackenzie Ziegler, who is on DWTS: Juniors!

So, with overviews on the night of dances and some information about next week, here is Paul Bentley, along with scores voted on by The Readers!

Jeopardy Results

At the beginning of Tuesday night, Tom and Erin announced that, even though every couple had prepared a dance for the night, only the five* couples with the lowest combined judges’ scores and viewer votes would have to perform. Based on those performances, the judges would give their scores, and the viewers at home would get to vote live during the show to vote for their favorite couples out of the five. At the end of the night, the couple with the lowest total combined score/votes from both nights would be eliminated.

*John and Emma were originally announced as in jeopardy, but out of the six couples in jeopardy, they were told that they ranked the highest of the six, which meant that they would not have to perform a dance, and therefore would not be eligible for elimination that night.

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Okay, so the couples that were safe that I assumed would be safe were Milo & Witney, Evanna & Keo, Bobby & Sharna, Juan Pablo & Cheryl, Tinashe & Brandon, and DeMarcus & Lindsay. I was actually very surprised that Joe & Jenna managed to escape jeopardy this week, because not only did he survive elimination with the lowest score out of all 13 couples, but he managed to beat six other couples, too! That’s impressive! He must have a huge fan base! I was surprised about Alexis & Alan being jeopardy, but when I really think about it, they kind of got mixed in the shuffle with their night one Jive, especially with Tinashe & Brandon also performing a really solid Jive not too long after her on night one. John & Emma were in jeopardy, but were later called safe (maybe because they were running out of time?), so that means that their exact placement on the leaderboard was eighth, which is actually pretty impressive because of how low he was on the scoreboard, but I had a feeling he was going to get a lot of votes! As for the rest of the couples in jeopardy, I wasn’t all too surprised, except I had a feeling that Mary Lou & Sasha would have managed avoiding jeopardy. I also felt bad for Danelle & Artem… Danelle seemed to be really bummed about it! But hey, at least she got to do another dance and get more airtime for some potential votes in the future!

Jeopardy Dances

Because they were in jeopardy, Mary Lou & Sasha, Danelle & Artem, Nikki & Gleb, Alexis & Alan, and Nancy & Val had to perform their prepared dances, which were the same style that they performed the night before. Then, based on their scores and votes, one of the couples was eliminated from the competition.

[Order of the Judges’ Scores: Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli]

Mary Lou Retton and Sasha Farber
Cha-Cha-Cha

Hot Stuff by Donna Summer
The Judges’ Scores: 6, 7, 6 (19/30)

The Readers’ Score: 7

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Mary Lou impressed me with her Cha-Cha-Cha on the first night, and she actually impressed me again with this second dance. She had some pretty decent dancing once again, and she was more in tune with the music than last time (not being able to hear the music the first time probably had to do with it). I love how Mary Lou was the star of this dance, from the solo at the beginning all the way to the dip at the end! In terms of room for improvement, I think Mary Lou could work on her transitions more to make them less “punchy,” and keeping her full energy through to the very end. This was one of my favorite performances of the night, and I actually feel that Mary Lou and Sasha were underscored for this. I can’t see a 6 being justified for it!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7

Danelle Umstead and Artem Chigvintsev
Foxtrot

Strong Ones by Armin van Buuren featuring Cimo Fränkel
The Judges’ Scores: 6, 6, 6 (18/30)

The Readers’ Score: 6

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: I find Danelle’s enthusiasm infectious, and it’s unfortunate that we weren’t able to feel that enthusiasm through her hesitated movements in her Foxtrot. Unfortunately, I think Danelle was too unsure about herself after being called in jeopardy, which made her digress a bit in her technique. She did have poise and class, but her movement was stutter-y and without much flare. And just like night one, she has to work on her rise and fall. But despite all of this, she was gorgeous and uplifting. I just hope that with a clean slate in scores for next week that she is able to trust both herself and Artem more so she can show us what she’s unintentionally hiding from everybody!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6

Nikki Glaser and Gleb Savchenko
Salsa
Eliminated- 13th Place

Tres Deseos by Gloria Estefan
The Judges’ Scores: 6, 7, 6 (19/30)

The Readers’ Score: 6

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This Salsa didn’t really seem much better nor worse than her other one, and it didn’t help that it looked a whole lot like her first one. It was more of the same, which I knew wasn’t going to be too good for her because she didn’t stand out much in the first night. I felt as though she was distracted too much with trying to being “fun” that she sacrificed some technique in doing so. She actually had some promising footwork and shoulder movement, but it was ultimately a bit too jumbled. I was really rooting for Nikki and Gleb to do well, but after seeing both of her Salsa dances, it unfortunately showed that they just didn’t stand out enough. At least Nikki took her elimination well!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 6

Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten
Jive

Shake the Room by Gamu
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 8, 8 (23/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Alright, Alexis! If Alexis and Alan weren’t getting votes already, I think this Jive helped her case big time! I liked the contrast of this Jive being “sexier,” as opposed to their “cute” Jive on Monday. Alexis was still a bit steppy, but she clearly had the best technique of all five celebrities in jeopardy on Tuesday! This woman is a star, and Alan’s choreography is highlighting that really well thus far. I’m really eager to see a more “intense” dance like a Tango or Paso Doble from them in the future!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8

#TeamRenTen 1(800)868-3401

Nancy McKeon and Val Chmerkovskiy
Quickstep

Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 7 (21/30)

The Readers’ Score: 6

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: I am impressed by all the hard work that Nancy is cleary putting into her dances. Val once again did not go easy on her, and even though she had trouble shifting her own wait and keeping a tight composure, she did a hell of a good job with this Quickstep! She had tons of happy and uplifting energy! She truly proved herself to be a top notch performer! Now that she’s gotten two wild, fast performances out of the way, I would love to see how she fares with a more delicate and slower style.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7

Premiere Night 2 Awards

Most Entertaining Dance: Mary Lou and Sasha’s Cha-Cha-Cha
Mary Lou and Sasha absolutely crushed their dance. There had a great execution of the Latin movement!

Best Costumes: Alexis and Alan’s Jive Costumes
Gold is a common color used on this show, but there’s a reason for it! Alexis and Alan didn’t have the flashiest costumes by any means, but they were nice and stylish!

Best Choreography: Mary Lou and Sasha’s Cha-Cha-Cha
Sasha highlighted so many of Mary Lou’s athletic strengths. It was sexy, it was fun, and it content that clearly distinguished itself from their first dance!

Strongest Couple: Alexis and Alan
I think there is no question that Alexis and Alan were the strongest couple in jeopardy on Tuesday. Alexis is really advanced dancer right now, and that’s going to help her stand out, especially if that means Alan is able to do more with his choreography to make them stand out!

Most Improved Celebrity: Mary Lou Retton
Another award for Mary Lou! She took the judges’ comments from the first night, and used their advice to improve the little things in her dancing, which ended up making a big difference!

Stand-Out Moment of the Night: Nikki’s “Rough Sets” Slipup
If you didn’t catch it during the episode, Tom asked Nikki about her taking the judges’ comments pretty well, and Nikki said that she is used to getting criticism, such as when she have “rough sets” with her comedy routines. Of course, it sounded like she said “rough sex,” and she just kind of rolled with it. Is it childish that I find this so funny? Probably. But whatever. :P

Furthermore

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: It’s a bummer that we didn’t get to see all of the performances that the couples rehearsed, but it is what it is. Apparently they needed time for the DWTS: Juniors cast announcement, even though I think they would have done it in shorter time, and allow the couples to do their dances and get their scores without comments (since they were already critiqued on their other dances of the same style in the first night) to save more time. Heck, they could have even gotten rid of the video packages before each dance since they didn’t really add much of anything of value this time around. Oh well.

Anyway, there is no elimination Monday, but there is a double elimination of Tuesday. Obviously, we haven’t seen the dances that the couples will be scored on yet, but if I were to make an early prediction, I would say that Nancy & Val, Danelle & Keo, and Joe & Jenna (even though they were safe on Tuesday) will need to stand out more to survive to week three!
