DWTS: Juniors - Week 4 (Halloween Night) Dance Overviews

The two-night Dancing Halloween Week event began on Sunday, October 28 with Halloween Night on Dancing With the Stars: Juniors! Plus, by combining the judges’ scores the studio audience’s votes, the next team was eliminated from the competition.

With thoughts on the night of performances, here is Paul Bentley, along with The Readers’ Scores, as determined by an online poll!

Halloween Night Dances

The eight remaining couples performed “spook-tacular” dances in the theme of the Halloween holiday. And at the end of the show, a team was eliminated from the competition.

[Order of the Judges’ Scores: Val Chmerkovskiy, Mandy Moore, Adam Rippon]

Akash Vukoti and Kamri Peterson, Mentored by Witney Carson
Argentine Tango

Weird Science by Oingo Boingo
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 7 (21/30)

The Readers’ Score: 7

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: I have to hand it to Witney for hitting it out of the park with the choreography and the production of Akash and Kamri’s dances this season. I loves the science lab theme of this Argentine Tango, which Kamri really got into! Akash had some good Tango flair, even when his goggles were falling on his face! XD That being said, I think that Akash has had more energy and better timing in some of his other dances, and that this dance simply needed a little more practice. But that’s okay… these two are a hoot to watch, and even with some flaws here and there, I am seeing a lot of growth in Akash’s technique!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7

Mandla Morris and Brightyn Brems, Mentored by Cheryl Burke
Charleston

Witch Doctor by Cartoons
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 7 (23/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: The Charleston is certainly a style that compliments the way Mandla moves really well. Cheryl’s choreography certainly brought out the best of Mandla’s abilities, and I was all for it! Sometimes his feet got a bit shuffled in his transition sections with Brightyn, but after making minor mistakes, he would get back to his great leg action! And there were a couple of good lifts put in this routine, too! I’ve been noticing Mandla break out of his shell more and more each week on this show, and that is really helping me get to know him better and making me want to root for him more.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8

Mackenzie Ziegler and Sage Rosen, Mentored by Gleb Savchenko
Jive

Monster Mash by Atwater Men’s Club
The Judges’ Scores:8, 8, 9 (25/30)

The Readers’ Score: 9

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: It was a cute idea to sort of the continue the story from their Quickstep, but this time as zombies. Brownie points for creativity! I’m glad that Gleb once again challenged Mackenzie with lots of content this week, although once again, I feel obligated to nitpick a bit. While Mackenzie did have some sharp Jive technique, she was too stompy and again danced with her feet “beneath” her. She sort of rushed the footwork and angled her legs a little too Barbie-like. I would like to see more fluidity in that department going forward. Nevertheless, Mackenzie and Sage filled the room with energy, and the troupe didn’t do too bad themselves! :P
Paul Bentley’s Score: 8

Jason Maybaum and Elliana Walmsley, Mentored by Emma Slater
Argentine Tango

Youngblood by 5 Seconds of Summer
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 9, 8 (25/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Jason has been impressing me so much this season! He is finally gaining a greater awareness of how to move his body, and he has more control in his movement than ever before! This Argentine Tango showcased how serious and powerful he can be in his performances, and I love it! He and Elliana have a great partnership with each other, which really helps the acting aspect of their routines. Sometimes he was a bit careful in hold, but as the weeks go on, he is going to become more confident in his abilities, and make an ever bigger impact than he is making now. Let’s go, Team Emma!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

#TeamEmma

Ariana Greenblatt and Artyon Celestine, Mentored by Brandon Armstrong
Paso Doble

Ways to Be Wicked by Dove Cameron & Sophia Carson & Cameron Boyce & Booboo Stewart
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 8, 7 (22/30)

The Readers’ Score: 8

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: I think this might just be the most underscored dance of DWTS: Juniors thus far. Sevens?! No way was this Paso Doble deserving of that low of a score! In fact, I think this was one of the best dances of the night, and I honestly wouldn’t have been mad at Ariana and Artyon getting a 10 or two for this! I did notice something minor, which was basically just that she had a few bumps while traveling, but that would be easy to overlook. Ariana was so excellently sharp and in the zone for this performance, and she gave the camera amazing intense looks! XD Luckily, Team Brandon survived this week despite the underscoring, so hopefully the judges are less harsh on them next week.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

Alana Thompson and Tristan Ianiero, Mentored by Artem Chigvintsev
Jazz
Eliminated- 8th Place

Ghostbusters by Ray Parker, Jr.
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 7 (21/30)

The Readers’ Score: 7

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This week, Alana’s confidence in herself and her investment into the dance really showed. In her past dances, it felt like something was missing, and I think what was missing was Alana really getting into the music. This Jazz was a complete change, though, because she was grooving along to the music like never before, even though she might have been been so into the song that she indicated her movements too much. She didn’t quite have as much momentum as Tristan, but she had a bit of a transformation in her technique. And that makes it even more unfortunate that this team was eliminated this week; Alana really started to understand the dances better, but now she’s out. :/ This team put in some nice effort, though, and Artem seemed to be a big help in getting Alana to truly “feel” the music.
Paul Bentley’s Score: 7

Sky Brown and JT Church, Mentored by Alan Bersten
Jive

Little Shop of Horrors by KIDZ BOP Kids
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 8 (26/30)

The Readers’ Score: 9

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: This was another couple that impressed me on Halloween Night! Brandon works so well with these kids, not only in terms of motivation, but in terms of making sure Sky and JT are doing their best while still having fun! Sky was giving her all (as she always does!) in this performance, and did really well with all the little tricks in there—especially that backwards spider crawl and flip! My only critique is that in one side-by-side section, Sky was kicking more forward than upward, which made it look just a bit clumsy. Every week, I always find myself praising these two, and I think it’s because they have the perfect combination of a good mentor, great athleticism, charismatic personalities, and amazing effort!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

#TeamAlan

Miles Brown and Rylee Arnold, Mentored by Lindsay Arnold
Samba

I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 9 (27/30)

The Readers’ Score: 10

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: If I were competing on DWTS: Juniors this season, I would definitely be keeping my eye on Miles and Rylee! Miles has been consistently standing out with his great rhythm and technique, and that is enhanced by Lindsay’s ability to make all of their dances showstoppers! Miles and Rylee were a hoot in this Samba, with everything from their quick footwork to their Samba bounce have some characterized flair in it! At times, Miles threw away his arms and was just a hair off from Rylee, so I would like to see Miles a little more conscious of dancing from his core moving forward. With that all said, this was the most impressive dance of the night!
Paul Bentley’s Score: 9

Halloween Night Awards

Most Entertaining Dance: Mandla and Brightyn’s Charleston
Mandla and Brightyn’s Charleston was just so much fun! Both of them really played into the silly music, which worked well for the theme. They were all over that dance floor, keeping up the energy from start to finish!

Best Costumes: Akash and Kamri’s Argentine Tango Costumes
How fitting was that mad scientist costume for Akash?! XD Akash and Kamri had some pretty rad and unique Sci-Fi costumes for their Argentine Tango, and I approve!

Best Choreography: Mackenzie and Sage’s Jive
The entire production of Mackenzie and Sage’s Jive was stellar. Mackenzie and Sage were center stage, and they were the perfect leading performers. The choreography was very suitable for Mackenzie’s style, and it was very cohesive to the feel of the dance.

Strongest Couple: Miles and Rylee
Miles and Rylee are a perfect match for each other. Not only are they both top notch performers, but they play off of each other so well in their routines!

Most Improved Child Celebrity: Jason Maybaum
Jason is one hell of a performer, but now he has even topped himself in that category. He is getting more and more used to the fluidity and naturality of dancing, and it helping him big time with his performances!

Stand-Out Moment of the Night: Alan Giving Sky a Pep Talk in Rehearsals
Oh, poor Sky! I hated seeing her cry in rehearsals. But you know what? She was able to get through it, and after Alan’s pep talk, she continued to shine!

Furthermore

Paul Bentley’s Thoughts: Right when Alana had what I would consider a breakthrough with the confidence she shows in her routines, she gets eliminated. :( She is such a big personality, and it’s going to be noticeable that he energy will be absent next week. With Honey Boo Boo eliminated, that leaves us with seven couples left. Things are getting real! Every team that is left in the competition are strong competitors and are in it to win it! The pressure is really going to be on them moving forward, but I hope the kids are finding it fun, and not stressful!

Because the Mickey’s 90th Spectacular show will air in the time slot of DWTS: Juniors next week, the Juniors show will not air next week. However, it will return on the following Sunday with Juniors’ Choice Night!
