From the Skybox (Week One): First Elimination Predictions and a Tie in the Fantasy Draft!

Week one of Dancing With the Stars showed us just a glimpse of what we are going to see from the couples this season. And with such a very competitive cast, anything can happen! And because of that, right off the bat, there is a tie for first place for our fantasy teams!

Each Friday, we are going to give additional thoughts on the week’s show, update our fantasy team points, state our predictions, and give information about the following week’s show in blog posts called From the Skybox!

So here is what Paul Bentley, Julia Delbel, and DWTS Dreams got out of this week’s show!

Overall Comments on the Premiere

@dwtsdreams: I didn't get to write comments for the blog on Wednesday; I only did scores. As a result I will be writing all my first impressions of some couples and my favorite/ least favorite dances here.

@dwtsdreams: Overall I loved the premiere of Dancing with the Stars Season 24. The opening number set the tone for the season and illustrated that this season isn't all fun and games. The whole night was filled with great production elements and I appreciated how the producers pulled back on some elements and expanded on others. This show is such a unique experience that you can't get anywhere else. Filled with nostalgia, Olympians, baseball players, singers, and even a dancer this year's cast is shaping up to me one of my favorites. I have been campaigning about having a baseball player on the show and it is happening and I couldn't be more happy. This female celeb lineup is the best I think we have ever had. Every single girl celeb has some sort of dance experience from gymnasts, ice skating, music videos, etc. We also have a professional dancer for this first time this season. Heather’s choice to be on the show has been one of the most controversial choices in DWTS history.

@dwtsdreams: Rashad was incredible and I was so happy to see Emma have such a capable partner. I am expecting big things from Emma this season and Week 1 was a great preview of the choreography we will be able to witness. Emma has never had such a capable partner so I hope she goes all out and learns to use his assets and strengthen his weakness.

@dwtsdreams: Normani came out like a fierce woman ready to win this competition. I loved her solo at the beginning to show who she is and her strong “sassy” confident self. Although I loved her personality she was very stiff. Like Val said she wasn't performing as a couple and that is something she needs to learn. Also her head was very stiff and her shoulders need to stay down at all times. I have so much admiration for her traveling across the world while doing this that takes an insane amount of work ethic! Great start for Normani but I do expect more from her!

@dwtsdreams: A LITTLE NOTE FOR THE HARMONIZERS :) : I promise you that nobody in this fandom is rude or mean and we are SO accepting of everyone! When we make comments like “oh that was my favorite or “she was kinda stiff” that doesn't mean we don't like her! We are so happy that she is on the show and she is so cute! I understand you are trying to protect her because she is in a girl group but please don't call Len names or say the show is for people with failing careers. We love and respect you guys so please respect us!

@dwtsdreams: People who surprised me: Nick and David! Nick and David totally surprised me and I definitely think David could go far! I am so excited to see where they both go!

@juliadelbel: Yeah I see David in the Top 6 minimum, more likely somewhere from 5th-3rd place. I think Nick is probably going out in 7th or 8th place and I can see Nancy finishing around there too if she’s not able to make a bigger impact in the near future.

@dwtsdreams: I love Sharna to the death and when I met her she was the sweetest human ever, but her choreography on Monday was not my favorite. It was NOT a Cha-Cha-Cha. It was just hip thrusting. There was no substance, and I don't even think it deserved a 5.

@TheBentleyNinja: I love how Dancing With the Stars put a star on the dance floor with Florence Henderson’s name on it in tribute of her. It’s such a nice touch!

@TheBentleyNinja: I feel like I say this a lot, but this season has some really tight competition. .And by tight, I mean really tight! There was so much potential in this premiere episode! The fight to the Mirror Ball Trophy is not going to be an easy one for anybody this season, and with a season where there are probably only going to be three couples in the finale, there is bound to be a so-called shocking elimination or two!

@juliadelbel: Even with the competition at such a high level, I hope the couples are still able to have fun and enjoy their time together on the show. I’m sort of getting a more serious vibe from most of the teams so far and I’m not really enjoying that. Simone and Sasha, Charo and Keo, David and Lindsay, and Mr. T and Kym seem to be keeping up the fun (while still working hard, of course) but I’m not getting that as much from the rest of the couples right now.

@TheBentleyNinja: I really like how every couple is dancing to a very different style than what they danced for in the premiere for week one [see dance styles below]. And is there not going to be a theme next week? That’s a first.

@juliadelbel: I also like that everyone is sharing their Week 2 style with at least one other contestant.

MVP (Most Valuable Pro) Picks

@dwtsdreams: Lindsay Arnold has become one of my favorites! She works well with all of her partners and leverages their strengths to make inexperienced individuals into finalists. She always puts a smile on my face and I am so proud of how hard she was worked and how far she has gone at such a young age. She created a wonderful routine for David and I love this partnership already!

@TheBentleyNinja: Overall, I feel like Emma Slater stood out in a top-notch way with her Cha-Cha-Cha with Rashad. Those two came out on the dance floor guns blazing, and just danced. Emma’s choreography was a no nonsense, yet lots of fun routine, and being that a large amount of pros on Monday night focused on either one or the other, Emma gave Rashad the exact right tools to come out as a contender, but also as someone to root for.

@juliadelbel: Lindsay and Emma were top picks of mine for this week as well but I really want to highlight how well Keo Motsepe did with coming up with a routine for Charo that had content but was tailored to her somewhat limited abilities. Like I said on Wednesday, it seems a lot of pros with the older celebrities kind of just have them do any old moves but that dance was actually a legitimate Salsa. I also think that so far he seems to be doing well with embracing her personality and unique traits while also keeping her focused and making sure she knows what she is doing (well, for the most part, but no one really could have predicted she was going to go off on Bruno like that on Monday and even Tom, who is usually excellent at handling that type of thing with ease, seemed quite frazzled).

Elimination Predictions

@dwtsdreams I think Chris will be the first one out.

@TheBentley: Being that Chris Kattan received such low scores right off the bat, I think that he and Witney will be the first couple out. But if they somehow manage to escape elimination, I think that Mr. T’s scores are close enough to be in the danger zone. However, I do think that if Chris is in fact safe this week, Erika is in the most danger. Her rehearsal package was not a very good look for her in terms of what the general DWTS audience votes for, and as we all know, women from The Real Housewives don’t usually go very far.

@juliadelbel: I’m going to be shocked if it’s anyone except Chris and Witney leaving on Monday (and did they really have to make him do a Jive when it’s obvious he’s being eliminated?) unless it turns out to be a double elimination, in which case I’d guess Erika and Gleb would be the second boot considering how little an impact they seemed to make last week. I’m calling it now that they’re “in jeopardy” on Monday in addition to Chris and I’m guessing the third person will be Mr. T, Charo, or maybe even Nancy.
