Hot Topics
Katie (@dwtsfishovskiy): [In reference to this week’s opening number] Okay, don’t @ but I thot it was lowkey very misogynistic
Katie (@dwtsfishovskiy): [continued] Misogynistic meaning the whole thing revolved around Val trying to impress a room full of MALE producers and with the stereotypical… Old Hollywood idea that an actress can’t make it big without a man
*We got many comments regarding to this topic, but Katie was the first.*
Bentley Julia brought this up about the opening number in the last blog post, and while I didn’t think of that when I initially saw it, and can see why many people are thinking that. My take on this, however, is that it was meant to showcase what classical Hollywood was like for men and women with their different “roles” at the time, which I thought that in and of itself kind of a cool thing to show. And, in my opinion, instead of making it seem like the male director characters were “better” than the female actor characters, I thought that the opening showcased the two different gender roles really tastefully. And sure, the guys were featured more than the girls, but I think that’s because of the story of going from paper to screen, plus we don’t really get to see the male pros spotlighted in an opening like that too often. Basically what I’m saying is that while it did in fact showcase the outdated gender roles of Hollywood, I think that that actually made for a well-executed concept. The women were glamorous and stellar, and the men were crisp and cool, which all came together for a pretty cinematic number. Sure, those roles might be stereotypical, but I think it was a good fit for this dance, especially because of how it showcased the pros in a grand way. The only thing that I was underwhelmed with was the dancing itself. But again, I can see why some people see it as misogynistic… Maybe it was just bad timing with the climate in Hollywood right now, too.
Hannah While watching the opening number, I was all about the aesthetic of it. Anything themed to “Old Hollywood” usually grabs my attention and praise pretty quickly. However, I was kind of underwhelmed by it. First by the lack of actual dancing in it, and upon further reflection, I did feel like it had a bit of a misogynistic feel to it. Now obviously in old Hollywood, men held the majority of the power. But this is something we all know. And truth be told, an opening like this couldn’t have come at a worse time, with all of the issues happening in Hollywood right now. I think this number could have been MUCH improved by trying to blend “Old Hollywood” with “Modern Hollywood” by having the male and female pros play more equal roles, but still keeping the “Old Hollywood” aesthetic with the glitz and glamour and overall theme (if that makes any sense). And truth be told, I’m really not all that wild about Mandy Moore’s opening numbers. She’s had some great opening numbers in the past (the opening number from the beginning of the season comes to mind), but more often than not, I feel very “meh” about opening numbers on the show. Personally, I would love it if the eliminated pros and troupe members choreographed opening numbers as a way to showcase their talents!
Bentley I get where you’re coming from with the whole Mandy Moore choreography thing, Hannah. Personally, I like her choreography most of the time, but having her as the opening number choreographer week after week does make things a bit stale. I think we just need a little bit more variety in this department.
Julia I barely paid attention to this as it was airing, but once I saw the tweets expressing concern about the implications I went back to look it over. Like Hannah, I love Old-Hollywood themed anything, but I really did not enjoy seeing the female dancers in this number used as props while all the real “characters” were played by men, especially with the recent allegations and all. I agree that the dance would have been better if they went with an Old-Hollywood aesthetic with more up-to-date roles for the dancers - particularly the women - to portray. Also, I agree with Bentley that more variety in pro number choreographers would be nice. Some of the best ones from recent seasons have come from the dancers themselves, like Witney’s “Like a River” routine from last season’s Finale and the performance a bunch of the guys collaborated on for one of the Season 23 results shows.
Dream I understand that this number was supposed to represent old Hollywood, but I do understand where Katie is coming from. Chivalry is a huge component of ballroom, but there’s a difference between the guys “presenting” the girls, and the entire number being a guy producer with a whole room of guys picking out a guy to “show in their movies.” I would love to see a number that is just pure dance and not a ton of full. Besides that, it was a cute number, but I understand what Katie is saying.
Julia Has anyone else noticed the lack of certain styles this season that are usually DWTS staples? Apart from 2-3 episodes we’ve barely seen any Cha-Chas or Sambas (or Salsas) and we’re not getting any for Halloween Night, either. I’m concerned that when they start running out of styles the last few weeks, people who haven’t done them in a while (or possibly at all if Drew sticks around past Monday night) are going to be rusty on their Latin technique. :P
Dream I agree! There has been a lot of Jazz and Contemporary which is very interesting considering their staples should be Ballroom or Latin. There has been lots of filler content this season. For example, troupe numbers with lots of acting and character with very little dancing or celebrity/pro numbers where the first 30 seconds is just acting. Where I get acting is dancing too, I would love to see more pure dance!
Bentley Oh yeah, I didn’t really realize how much Latin we’ve been missing out on. What is especially odd is the lack of Cha-Cha because usually those are basically every other dance during the first few weeks, but that’s not the case this time around. I guess that it’s going to be a challenge in that aspect for the couples as we come towards the end!
Week 6 MVP Picks
Most Valuable Pro
Bentley I don’t even have to think about this one. Mark Ballas’s choreography is by far one of the best things to come out of this season, and it would be foolish of me not to choose him after that absolutely incredible Argentine Tango from Monday night! Creative people like Mark are one in a million, and we as an audience are so lucky to be able to witness what he is able to create! I have never been so astonished by a pro’s choreography on this show as much I have been with Mark’s. Sometimes I think that he is bound to be running out of ideas, but as soon as I think that, he blows me away and somehow tops something incredible that he has already done. I never thought a partnership could be as solid as Paige VanZant and Mark’s in Season 22, but Lindsey Stirling and Mark have become one of the most constantly refreshing and memorable couples in the history of this show, and Mark definitely deserves a lot of recognition for that! And not only that, but how can you not love Mark’s personality?! He is such an incredible human being, and an even better performer!
Hannah I have to agree with Bentley on this one! Mark Ballas has been sorely missed for the last year on DWTS, and having him back is breathing new life into the show again. That Argentine Tango from Monday night will go down in history. Mark Ballas truly is a creative genius, and is worthy of all of the praise that he gets. He really has outdone himself with Lindsey, and there’s no stopping this duo from continuing to blow us all away from now until the finale!
Julia My MVP of the week is also Mark Ballas for all the reasons Bentley and Hannah covered! Mark has kept things somewhat low-key (well, low-key for him :P) up to this point, but Monday night saw a return to form with his wild and creative mind coming out in full force, and I think him making us wait this long for it helped viewers appreciate this piece that much more!
Dream Some of our wonderful pros choreograph dances that are only fit for DWTS, but Mark choreographs dances that could fit in any industry-level concept video! He is truly an incredible modern choreographer! Mark Ballas is my MVP!
Week 7 Predictions
Bentley Some of you in the DWTS fan community have found some good evidence suggesting that next week is likely going to be a double elimination (specifically in the wording of the Week 7 press release), and if that is the case, I think we’re going to have at least one fan-favorite go. The three celebrities on the bottom of the leaderboard right now are Drew, Frankie, and Victoria, and out of those three, I think that Frankie is the least likely to go. Outside of them, I think Vanessa is also more likely to be eliminated during an elimination soon. I also have a good feeling that Terrell is safe with his scores this week, but I have a small part of me saying that he is also a possibility to go, but I wouldn’t say he is as likely to leave as the others I named. If anyone I didn’t name are going to be eliminated on Monday, I’m going to be surprised. Ultimately, though, if there is one elimination on Halloween Night, my guess is that Vanessa will be out. And if it is a double elimination, I’ll add Drew to that. And as a back-up pick, I’ll say Victoria.
Hannah As I type this at 11:42 PM on Friday night, I’m just now seeing a tweet from George Pennacchio saying “The Halloween-themed episode of #DWTS may be scarier than expected. 😟 Stay tuned” so our good friend George pretty much confirmed that Monday night will be a double elimination. We’re now at the point in the competition where I don’t want anyone to leave, but sadly, we have to eliminate two people on Monday night’s show. So, my guess is that Victoria and Drew will be eliminated on Monday. With my back-up pick being Vanessa or Terrell.
Julia It’s now Sunday, and George tweeted earlier today that we should expect more couples than usual in jeopardy, and since every elimination episode so far this season has had either two or three couples there, I’m going to guess the entirety of one of the teams will be announced safe while the members of the other will have to wait until the end of the show to learn their fate. And because I’m pretty sure Victoria is the low woman on the totem pole when both scores and votes are factored in, it’ll probably be Team Phantom called in jeopardy. So if it is indeed a double elimination, we’d lose two couples from that group. I believe Frankie is ahead of everyone else on the team in the scores/votes combo (yes, even Vanessa, despite the large spread for him to cover) so he should be fine. I would say Vanessa would be the one leaving with Victoria but considering how much the show seems to love keeping the Chmerkovskiys around as long as possible, I’m having a hard time envisioning both she and Victoria leaving tomorrow, especially with Nick and Peta already out (unless they want to make news headlines with the brothers leaving together). I’m also kind of on the fence as to whether Drew can cover the large gap to pass Vanessa, despite his demo support, so I’m going to say he and Victoria leave tomorrow with an outside chance of Vanessa. (And if they don’t end up doing the team jeopardy thing, I’ll start wondering about Terrell...)
Dream I try not to over-analyze who's going home next week so as of right now, Terrell.
Next Week...
This week’s DWTS press release gives us the information on next week’s dances during the spookiest night of the season-- Halloween Night! The eight couples left will perform splendidly horrific individual dances, and then will team up for the Team Dance Challenge!
For the first round of dances, the couples will perform their individual routines. Here is the information about their performances:
- Drew Scott and Emma Slater will dance a Charleston to Remains of the the Day by Danny Elfman
- Frankie Muniz and Witney Carson will dance Contemporary to Every Breath You Take by Chase Holfelder
- Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold will dance a Paso Doble to Animals by Martin Garrix
- Lindsey Stirling and Mark Ballas will dance a Paso Doble to Roundtable Rival by Lindsey Stirling
- Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev will dance a Jive to I Put a Spell on You from Hocus Pocus (1993) by Bette Midler
- Terrell Owens and Cheryl Burke will dance a Tango to Superfreak by Rick James
- Vanessa Lachey and Maks Chmerkovskiy will dance a Paso Doble to Game of Survival by Ruelle
- Victoria Arlen and Val Chmerkovskiy will dance a Viennese Waltz to The Night We Met by Lord Huron
As it has been for many seasons now, for the team dances, there will be two teams consisting of four couples each that will compete against each other. As a new twist, though, the team captains were determined by whichever two couples had the lowest cumulative score this season, which ended up being Drew & Emma and Terrell & Cheryl. The team captains got to choose who else would be on their teams. So, here are the teams and the themes for their dances:
- Team Monster Mash (Jordan & Lindsay, Lindsey & Mark, Nikki & Artem, and Terrell & Cheryl) will dance a Team Freestyle to Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett
- Team Phantom of the Opera (Drew & Emma, Frankie & Witney, Vanessa & Maks, and Victoria & Val) will dance a Team Freestyle to Phantom of the Opera by Original London Cast & Michael Reed
