It was Disney Night this week on Dancing With the Stars, and the magic definitely radiated throughout the ballroom!
This week, along with guest blogger DWTS Fanatic (@dwtsfanatic1 on Twitter), Julia Delbel, Paul Bentley, and DWTS Dreams are giving their thoughts on the week 5 performances. And there are a lot of disagreements on the scores and rankings!
Disney Night Dances
Before the fourth elimination of the season, the top nine couples danced to songs from various movies by The Walt Disney Company.
[Order of the Judges’ Scores: Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Julianne Hough, Bruno Tonioli]
Opening Number
What Can A Little Magic Do? By District 78, featuring Alfonso Ribeiro
@TheBentleyNinja: I always knew that Alfonso Ribeiro could sing, but I never actually heard him sing before. And I was quite impressed! The performance was more than what I could ask for from a Disney Night opening, and it overall had a fun, springtime feel to it. I absolutely loved the appearances of everybody real and fictional, although I didn’t quite understand what happened when Alfonso said, “Micky, take it away!” Was there supposed to be something cool to happen? Or was that it? All that happened was an underwhelming sparkle on the dancefloor. But all in all, I am really digging how inclusive the opening numbers have been this season!
@dwtsdreams: This number was pure magic. The way the cameras were used to navigate around the set mixed with the beautiful costumes and sets created a magical number. JT in the opening number created a sense of youth and young Disney magic and he made me smile from ear to ear. Everyone looked so beautiful and it was such a joyous moment. This was my favorite Disney opening number.
@dwtsfanatic1: Yet again Alfonso captured our hearts with his singing and dancing talent. In all, the opening number was very uplifting and a joy to watch. I liked the way the whole cast played a part and they all had a chance to dance alongside with the pros. It was also great to see those two young dancers (JT Church and Gracyn) featured in the number as well.
@juliadelbel: This was very much like an awards show opening number and it was fantastic! Though I do agree the “Mickey, take it away!” bit didn’t really make any sense.
Rashad Jennings and Emma Slater
Foxtrot: Evermore by Josh Groban
Disney Movie Theme: Beauty and the Beast (2017)
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 8, 9, 8 (32/40)
#TeamShadSquad 1(800)868-3411
@TheBentleyNinja: Dazzling. This Foxtrot was classically luxurious and permeated with smooth lines. Rashad, despite the moments with his collapsing arms and shoulders, kept a consistent hold and frame, polished with grace and precision. I can tell that Rashad really focused on his footwork this week, which was what he had been lacking in most this season. Rashad might have played as the Beast in this routine, but he was rather charming in every minor detail of this performance. And Emma was gorgeously elegant herself, too. I can see why there would be a wide range of thoughts on this performance, considering that there were minor mistakes scattered around, and the music had a lot going onto it, but I do not understand the 7 from Carrie Ann in the slightest. I feel as though Rashad was underscored, but on the bright side, that gives Rashad more room to gain points from the judges.
Bentley’s Score: 9
@dwtsfanatic1: Their costumes were very royal and regal...a great Foxtrot that had a lot of content. Rashad has always been a personal favorite of mine since the season premiere. He moves with elegance and ease as well as doing a good job leading Emma across the dance floor. Emma’s choreography was great and it told the story perfectly. The song they danced to was very difficult to keep in time but they still managed to give a flawless performance. I really do not understand why Carrie Ann gave Rashad a 7, I feel that he deserved at least an 8. I am certain that Rashad is going to come back next week with a bang.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 9
@dwtsdreams: There was so much hype from Rashad’s 39 last week that I felt like this week was a slight letdown. Don't get me wrong, this Foxtrot was regal with great lines but it didn't live up to my high expectations. Rashad and Emma are incredible and I expect a lot. I did enjoy Emma’s choreography and felt like it embodied the magic of Disney.
DWTS Dream’s Score: 8
@juliadelbel: I wish they’d just done a regular Waltz to “Beauty and the Beast” because “Evermore” doesn’t really work well as a Foxtrot, or any dance style, really. Rashad showed a lot of grace and had great frame and lines in this performance but he was a little flat-footed again and looked a little nervous here and there. I thought the score of 32 was fine but in comparison to others seemed a little low, and I was surprised at the 7.
Julia’s Score: 8
Nick Viall and Peta Murgatroyd
Jazz: I’ve Got No Strings by Dickie Jones
Disney Movie Theme: Pinocchio (1940)
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 8, 9, 8 (34/40)
#TeamBabyGotBach 1(800)868-3409
@TheBentleyNinja: As far as everything I’ve seen about this dance, I am the only one, as far as I know, who thinks that dance should have gotten a perfect score (or at least a nearly perfect score). I didn’t see any mistakes or poorly executed moves, and along with that, it was an entertaining and fun number with character and charisma that I thought we might never see from Nick. Nick has made a huge turnaround from his dance last week, and even stepped it up with the complicated choreography he was given by Peta. I really liked this take on the Jazz style, especially with the theatrical aspect of it. I am elated to see that Nick has finally had a breakthrough this week, and I hope it carries on through the rest of his time on the competition!
Bentley’s Score: 10
@dwtsfanatic1: Nick delivered above my expectations this week and it was nice to see that he was willing to fully embrace the character. I think that Nick is the most improved celebrity this season. It’s been a steady climb but every week he comes back even better than the previous week. Peta included some intricate steps in the dance and Nick executed them nicely. I do hope that Nick will be able to continue with his rising progress as he’s been in jeopardy twice now. So they really need to come out with a show stopper that will blow our minds. The choreography that Peta gave him suited the character perfectly and I am pleased that the judges commended Peta for her work.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 8
@dwtsdreams: I was so impressed with Nick this week. He really broke out of his shell and fully embodied the character. He was not nervous Nick rather dancer Nick! He still has so much to work on but this was such a big step in his journey. Peta killed this choreography. Every week she drags perfect routines showcasing Nick’s strengths and that has been a huge benefit to him making it this far!
DWTS Dream’s Score: 9
@juliadelbel: It was nice to see Nick so comfortable out on the dance floor, especially with this performance because this was the type of dance which required him to go all-out in order for it to really work. I think he did well but the choreography was a little simple for those 9’s, plus he got out of sync in a few places. This was still his best dance to date and a major step in the right direction for him. Going into Monday night I was sure if Nick made it through the Week 5 elimination, he would be toast Week 6 for sure, but by the end of the show he wasn’t the only one I was worried about so he may turn out to be safe again.
Julia’s Score: 8
Erika Jayne and Gleb Savchenko Eliminated- 9th Place
Viennese Waltz: Unforgettable by Sia
Disney Movie Theme: Finding Dory (2016)
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 8, 8 (32/40)
#TeamPrettyXXpensive 1(800)868-3405
@dwtsfanatic1: Erika’s dance was subtle but filled with passion and emotion. It was great to see another side to Erika and it’s a shame that she was eliminated after delivering her best routine of the season. I do think that she deserved at least one nine from the judges.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 9
@dwtsdreams: Erika really branched out this week. I loved see her elegant side and see her embrace where she is at. The dance was very simple yet elegant and regal!
DWTS Dream’s Score: 8
@TheBentleyNinja: I think that my favorite animation of the night was of the camera going under the sea to show Erika on the ocean-lit dance floor! I would have like to have seen costumes that were obvious that they were for FInding Dory, but I ended up enjoying the simple, elegant outfits that they had instead. Erika showed us an ease that we had not yet seen from her, and it was refreshing with this change of pace. Disney Night was filled with odd music, and considering that Erika and Gleb danced a Viennese Waltz to a song without a one-two-three count, Unforgettable got itself into that category. But nonetheless, Erika was delicate and had smooth transitions, even though she had awkward-looking jumps here and there. And besides her minor balancing issues, Erika performed like she had never performed before. This was another predictable elimination of the season, but I think I’m going to miss seeing Erika improve the way she had all season.
Bentley’s Score: 8
@juliadelbel: This was Erika’s best dance of the season by far and I’m so sad she was eliminated. It sucks that production sometimes seemingly tends to wait for people to be eliminated to give them something they’ll really shine in, because I think if she’d gotten this sort of style beforehand she may have lasted longer on the show. I thought her lines were excellent and she really captured the emotion of the dance. My only major complaint with this one was that I did wish the costumes had at least matched the colors of the characters from Finding Dory, even if they couldn’t dress to look like fish.
Julia’s Score: 9
Heather Morris and Alan Bersten (Maksim Chmerkovskiy)
Jazz: For the First Time in Forever by Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell (music by Kristen Anderson and Robert Lopez)
Disney Movie Theme: Frozen (2013)
The Judges’ Scores: 8, 8, 9, 9 (34/40)
#TeamMaksimumHeat 1(800)868-3406
@dwtsfanatic1: Heather is a star and every Monday night, she delivers with her performance. Although the choreography did not have much Jazz in it. Heather character portrayal was magnificent...her acting skills came out and you could see that she was really into the Anna character. I almost understand why Carrie Ann and Len would haved loved to see her go full on out with the Jazz content. The special thing about Disney night is the fact the contestants take on characters which I feel Heather did effortlessly.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 10
@dwtsdreams: I am a Jazz dancer, and this dance made me so upset. That was not Jazz. Alan literally said on the ET livestream that it wasn't Jazz. I don't care that she is a professional Jazz dancer. I just want to see Jazz. As a result of her being a professional, why didn't Maks uses this as an opportunity? I wanted to see turns, kicks, leaps, and I got nothing besides lifts and walking around. I was disappointed.
DWTS Dream’s Score: 8
@TheBentleyNinja: This dance gave me flashbacks to Nastia Liukin’s Jazz from season 20 not only because of the Frozen theme, but also because of the severe lack of Jazz content. And that blows for Heather because she has so many capabilities, and she was only doing the best with what was given. The music could partially be to blame, but as seen from Rashad and Erika this week, music can always be worked around. Maks definitely had a case for why his choreography wasn’t the most compact this week, but saying that the scene from the movie involved only one character was probably the weakest argument that he could have made. It doesn’t seem to hard to throw in another character (unless it’s a dance like Carlos PenaVega’s Rumba from Season 21, when he was paying tribute to a movie that was all about solo dancing). But because Heather was given was she was given, I can’t be too harsh on her for the choreography. I loved how theatrical Heather and Alan were, and the spins that traveling that they did were absolutely wonderful. The lift after Heather and Alan stepped off of the frozen water fountain was a bit stiff, but all of the other lifts worked really well in the routine. I also loved the small details of this number (especially when Heather nailed Alan in the face with a snowball!), but because there were pretty much only small details, I wasn’t able to see the dance cohesively as a whole. It’s a shame, really. But now that Maks will be returning next week, I expect him to be on his A-game with choreography after four weeks to plan!
Bentley’s Score: 9
@juliadelbel: Soooooo Heather was pretty much screwed either way for different reasons with this style, which makes me wish she didn’t get assigned Jazz in the first place. If they’d actually done a proper Jazz routine, many would have deemed it unfair due to her professional experience with the style. However, what actually happened may have had a worse effect on her. Yes the song was not a good choice from production, but the style was JAZZ. On DWTS, that’s pretty much code for “Freestyle” but this routine barely had dancing of ANY kind in it at all. It mostly consisted of Heather running around and occasionally being expressive with her arms, with a couple dashes of out-of-hold Foxtrot steps mixed in. Maks coming back next week worries me, because he’s the one who created this dance this dance and it was the weakest choreography of any of Heather’s dances so far this season. I also think Heather is one of three or four people at risk for elimination on Monday.
Julia’s Score: 8
Bonner Bolton and Sharna Burgess
Tango: When Can I See You Again? By Owl City
Disney Movie Theme: Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 8, 8, 7 (30/40)
#TeamDenimNDiamonds 1(800)868-3401
@dwtsfanatic1: I am not an expert in dance but one thing I do know is that in Tango you cannot break from hold, so I was surprised that the judges did not call that out afterwards. I didn’t feel any connection with this dance as I did with others. I understand that with Bonner’s injuries, there’s a limit to the choreography Sharna can teach him, however, for the bits lacking in choreography. Bonner should have expressed himself more and enjoyed the character a bit more. I would have loved to see more facial expressions...it seemed like his mind was fully focused on nailing the steps. I think Bonner was overscored on this dance but I guess the judges have to be more lenient with him because of his limited abilities and his injuries.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 7
@dwtsdreams: This wasn't a Tango and I was not impressed. They broke hold so many times it just didn't have the passion and force of a tango. I am sorry but I don't have anything to say about Bonner. To be honest, he is just there. Each week his dancing is the same and he seems as if he has just plateaued. Sharna doesn't seem very inspiring this season and this “chemistry” the producers claim they have is so not there. It is so awkward between them and it is so forced. The choreography has seemed super basic and just the same old, same old. This is my least favorite partnership that has ever happened on the show.
DWTS Dream’s Score: 6
@TheBentleyNinja: Alright, I am going to defend this Tango. I actually thought that this was very solid Tango; the choreography was clear to me that it was a Tango, and even though it had a lot out of hold, more than half of the Tangos in recent seasons of the show are guilty of the treason (although this one did have a whole lot!). The theme was my favorite of the night with the colorful set and fun storyline. Bonner was stable and steady like he usually is in the ballroom style, but there could have been some more breathing room. But being that Bonner has all kinds of metal inside of him, I give him props for the amount of fluidity that he did have. I agree that Bonner’s energy and enthusiasm did not match that of the outgoing Sharna, but although this was not his best dance, I still saw improvements in certain areas of his stature.
Bentley’s Score: 7
@juliadelbel: I liked the choreography for this performance (there was a lot of breaking of hold but that type of thing is usually more relaxed on Disney Night) and Bonner did well in hold but he just did not embody the character very well at all which was a big issue for me, especially on Disney night. He was still not very expressive and most of the times he came across as robotic or just “going through the motions”, both of which were problems in his previous performances as well. Bonner is running out of Ballroom dances to do (aka the dances most suited to his skillset) which means he’s probably going to have a lot of trouble in the coming weeks with the upcoming Latin dances-namely the ones requiring a lot of hip action’due to his movements generally being very stiff.
Julia’s Score: 7
Normani Kordei and Valentin Chmerkovskiy
Paso Doble: I’ll Make a Man Out of You by Donny Osmond
Disney Movie Theme: Mulan (1998)
The Judges’ Scores: 10, 9, 10, 10 (39/40) Highest Score of the Night
#TeamValMani 1(800)868-3410
@dwtsfanatic1: It was all about girl power for Normani, she executed the Paso with power and force. Normani is a versatile dancer and every week she comes out to prove her worth. The use of the sticks as a prop was a very clever idea because it fitted with the dance style and Mulan theme. I really like Normani as a contestant, she seems to takes the judges comments on board and you can tell she is enjoying her time on the show from her composure whenever she is interviewed. (Donny Osmond did a fantastic job with song performance as well). I hope that Normani will be able to keep up with her streak and continue to bring us great dance moves.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 10
@dwtsdreams: Finalist. That is the word that comes to mind when I think of Normani. That girl is a force to be reckoned with. She represents strength and girl power. I am so in love with her message and the way she portrays it. She is classy yet speaks her mind and regal yet outgoing. I have come to love Normani this season. This dance was full of strength and was a perfect Paso.
DWTS Dream’s Score: 10
@TheBentleyNinja: Okay, this dance was really cool! The force and power that Normani puts into her routines really came into use this week with the rage that is transpired through the Paso Doble. Her energy might have been just a little out of control, and her shaping could use just a little more shaping, but that doesn’t change the fact that this dance was fierce and showstopping! All that Normani has to do is tweak a few little things, and by that point, she was be nearly unstoppable! Val always impresses me during Disney Night! I think that the choreography for this dance is on the same level as the Samba that he did with Rumer Willis in season 20. . . and that’s saying something!
Bentley’s Score: 9
@juliadelbel: I LOVE how into character Normani was for this performance! She has proven to be quite the versatile dancer as well! I agree with Bentley about her shaping, but I thought her energy really enhanced the whole thing! I also would have liked just a little more Paso content, but again, things are more relaxed on Disney night so that wasn’t as big a deal to me this week.
Julia’s Score: 9
David Ross and Lindsay Arnold
Jive Ride by ZZ Ward
Disney Movie Theme: Cars 3 (2017)
The Judges’ Scores: 7, 7, 8, 7 (29/40) Lowest Score of the Night
#TeamLadyAndTheGramp 1(800)868-3404
@dwtsfanatic1: We all know Jive is one of the harder dances to learn, so in general I was pleased with David’s performance. Lindsay has a great talent for bringing out the best in her partners and she is currently doing that with David this season. Character-wise, David was in full character mode and took on that task. However, it seemed like he tired out during the dance and I did not really feel the vibe that I was expecting from watching a Jive. I agree with the judges on the scoring for David this week, hence why the score of 7. On the other hand, their costumes were awesome.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 7
@dwtsdreams: The Jive is a tricky dance full of agility and speed. Unfortunately, David didn't nail this dance, but he attempted with great performance skills. I would have liked to see more Jive content, but I think Lindsay embraced the movie and Disney Week!
DWTS Dream’s Score: 7
@TheBentleyNinja: There are very few songs in the genre that Ride is in that I enjoy, but the song to this dance was immediately catchy to me! While David had his typical fun character, he was not precise in his footwork. He also needed to kick his knees higher and point his toes to make the dance look less awkward because the Jive is a dance that looks off when even the slightest elements are off. But I do have to say that David’s timing was impeccable, and, as crazy as it sounds, it looks like he has gotten significantly more flexible than he was in week one. There is no denying that this routine entertained, but I don’t think that it matched up to the spectacular dances that were sprinkled throughout the show.
Bentley’s Score: 7
@juliadelbel: I thought David did okay with this dance considering his skill level and how difficult Jive can be to learn, especially so quickly. I thought his energy level was good and he had good timing, but he was flat-footed and forgot to point his toes at times. Also I don’t blame David or Lindsay for this, but this routine felt like a giant commercial for Cars 3 and ZZ Ward, which was kind of annoying. David is currently at the bottom of the leaderboard, but he’s actually one of the people I’m most confident about being safe next week.
Julia’s Score: 7
Nancy Kerrigan and Artem Chigvintsev
Jazz: That’s How You Know by Amy Adams
Disney Movie Theme: Enchanted (2007)
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9 (36/40)
#TeamBladesOfGlory 1(800)868-3408
@dwtsfanatic1: Let me start by stating that these two should get a special award for being the smiliest contestants on the show. So much joy and happiness radiates from both Nancy and Artem when they dance that I find myself smiling too. They are just so loveable. Nancy looked beautiful in her dress and her resemblance to Amy Adams from the movie itself made me love the dance even more. (Quick side note: Enchanted is my favorite Disney movie). Artem filled the Jazz number with a lot of content which she nailed, and her character portrayal was perfect. I wished she would have gotten at least one ten from the judges because she certainly deserved it. Nancy is the dark horse of this season, so I will not be surprised if she makes it all the way to the final four.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 10
@dwtsdreams: This dance was so joyous, and made me smile from ear to ear. I adore Nancy and her ability to want to soak up any information she hears. This dance was filled with character parts and content. I loved the use of troupe and the concept! Great job, Artem!
DWTS Dream’s Score: 9
@TheBentleyNinja: This routine looked like a Broadway performance! Sometimes good dancers on this show start to go a little downhill in their performance value about halfway through the season, but it is the exact opposite with Nancy! She is lighter on her feet, looser in her shoulders, and more fluid in her extensions! It seemed like she was chasing the music towards the end, but minus that, Nancy was perfection! Nancy was the perfect Disney princess, and surprisingly enough, Artem had a lot of Disney flair, too! His choreography this season is stellar, which is shown through the creativity of such a theatrical song for an open-ended Jazz number! Nancy and Artem might just be the best matchup of the season!
Bentley’s Score: 9
@juliadelbel: I thought Nancy did very well with this routine, nailing the Jazz steps given to her and excellently embodying the character as well! I do wish there has been a bit more content in the dance, because there did seem to be quite a bit of pausing throughout the performance, but it was still very enjoyable to watch. I do worry for Nancy a little next week because she’s not getting as much buzz as anyone else at this point, but hopefully her high score will be enough to keep her safe!
Julia’s Score: 9
Simone Biles and Sasha Farber
Contemporary: How Far I’ll Go by Auli’i Cravalho (music by Lin-Manuel Miranda)
Disney Movie Theme: Moana (2016)
The Judges’ Scores: 9, 9, 10, 10 (38/40)
#TeamGoldenGiggles 1(800)868-3412
@dwtsfanatic1: After Simone’s emotional performance last week, I hoped that she will now be able to show more emotion in her performance and connect with the audience. She certainly did not fail to do that this week as well. Moana was a perfect character for her to showcase and she portrayed it nicely. Just like Julianne alluded to, Simone is now finding herself in the competition, so I hope that in her future performances, she will continue to show the audience this new Simone. Sasha did a great job with regards to combining Simone’s gymnastic skills and tricks into the dance without it disrupting the flow of the dance.
DWTS Fanatic’s Score: 9
@dwtsdreams I enjoyed this performance. There is something about Simone’s dancing that is so pure and innocent that I love. She truly dances WITH the music and not ON the music. Her musicality is impeccable and I adore her performance qualities. She has great lines but sometimes she is stiff in the back, so I would love to see Sasha work on that.
DWTS Dream’s Score: 9
@TheBentleyNinja: Simone was the perfect Moana! She embodied her character as an oceanic tribal girl in such an interesting and perfect way to fit into the Contemporary style! Simone payed attention to detail with everything from her dynamic facial expressions to her perfectly pointed feet! I love all of the power that she put into all of those difficult jumps and kicks that Sasha choreographed for her, but I would have like to have seen the content executed more lightly. I also would have liked to have seen more vulnerability, but that’s just a personal preference (and that could be a challenge to do with the hard-hitting music and theme). But this dance still showcased Simone’s excellent abilities, and asserted that Simone and Sasha are a force to be reckoned with!
Bentley’s Score: 9
@juliadelbel: I enjoy Simone’s performances more and more every week, and it was so seeing her take on such an iconic song! (Yes, it came out less than half a year ago, but it’s already iconic to me.) I think she did well with conveying the character of Moana and her excitement and longing for adventure, and she executed the movements beautifully! The gymnastic stuff was fun but my favorite parts were when she just threw everything she has into the Contemporary steps and put her all into them. It proved she’s not just a gymnast any more, but a dancer that is here to compete and willing to rise to the challenge.
Julia’s Score: 10

DWTS Fanatic’s Final Comments
@dwtsfanatic1: In all, I really enjoyed watching most of the contestants on Disney week with Nancy and Normani as the two who stood out the most for me. Nick also stood out mainly because he has shown the most improvement on the show. Since the beginning of the season my picks for the Mirrorball trophy were Rashad and Normani which I am still sticking too as I see them making it to the finals. Although I think I may have to add Nancy to my favorites list now. The competition is still very tough and I feel like there is a double elimination coming up soon so none of the contestants can leave any room to play safe. It was a shame to lose Erika on the day she performed her best dance of the season.
