Overall Comments on Boy Bands vs. Girl Groups Night

@TheBentleyNinja: Anyone else notice the production of the show becoming more and more problematic every week? Besides the obvious lighting problem at the end of Monday’s show, there were a whole bunch of weird camera angles and sound problems. And was it just me, or did the show skip twice during Heather’s Rumba?

@TheBentleyNinja: Although I am not a huge fan of the medley mashups for the team freestyles (let alone the whole singer/musical group themes and the men vs. women team matchings), I do think that they worked a lot better this time around. In season 22, Team Beyoncé had such a mess of a mashup, but this time around, both teams had songs with cohesive transitions between them.

@juliadelbel: I forgot to mention this on the Wednesday blog, but I appreciated how both teams had everyone dance together the entire time. I feel like it’s cheap in a way when they spend most of the routine on solos. The only time I saw that happen this season was Rashad and Emma’s little section to transition into the final part of the Boy Band dance which was just a diversion in order to make the switch and didn’t last too long.

@juliadelbel: This season is making me depressed. There’s too much pressure on everyone and it’s been a chore to watch for the most part. I don’t like it when bloggers go on to hate their favorite things, but I’ve agreed to write here for the rest of the season so unless you guys want me to stop for being so negative I’ll stay.

MVP (Most Valuable Pro) Picks

@juliadelbel: I was disappointed about Rashad’s dance style assignment for the week, because I’ve been waiting for a more fun and lighthearted number from him for weeks now, but Emma Slater managed to come up with a Tango routine that showed off both the serious and fun sides of his performance abilities which I very much appreciated!

@TheBentleyNinja: After his leave of absence with his injury, Maks Chmerkovskiy came back like he never left. His choreography was strong, his connection with Heather maintained itself since week one, and helped create the superior choreography of Team Girl Group over Team Boy Band. Even though we only saw a glimpse of him this season, he performed with his partner this week in a big way, allowing both he and Heather to stand out.

Predictions on Next Week’s DOUBLE Elimination

@juliadelbel: I don’t get the sense any of this week’s performances were impactful enough to really shake up where the votes have been going. Heather’s Rumba might have drawn more attention and votes to her had she stayed but since she got eliminated Monday night it didn’t have the chance to. With that said, I’m guessing the Week 7 elimination will probably be Nick and Peta (who I think may have left on Monday had their Disney Jazz not gotten those 9’s). Bonner and David seem to have a lot of support, and Normani and Rashad are probably too far out of reach for the lowest scorers to pass this week. I’m a little nervous for Nancy and Simone based on this week, but I think Heather’s elimination reminded viewers that even the higher-scoring dancers need votes too!

Okay so after I wrote all that the press release came out and announced a double elimination. Also I’ve become even more disgruntled with this season in the past couple days. I’m gonna say Nick is gone for sure with either Nancy or Simone. I know the two ladies have been doing well but it’s a reflection on how I think the votes are going.

@TheBentleyNinja: Even after Heather’s relatively shocking elimination to a large portion of the DWTS audience, I still find the eliminations hard to predict. And with Heather gone, that sent a message to the voters that anyone can be going home, which probably shook things up with the way the votes turned out this time around. Plus, with immunity up for grabs during a double elimination, that is supremely important for whoever wins it. Despite that, though, I still feel as though Bonner and Nick are near the bottom, especially with their scores this week. I’m also going to throw Nancy in there, too, because she is arguably the weakest woman left, and with a probable surge of votes for those on top this week, she might have been left in the dark with voters. However, being in jeopardy this week might have riled some fans up. I am going to be shocked next week if Rashad, Normani, or Simone are eliminated. Anyone else is fair game.

So, as tough as it might have been to come to this conclusion, my prediction for the eliminations next week are Nick in seventh place and Bonner sixth place. Or maybe that, but switched around. And if not one of them, then Nancy. And if one of them gets immunity (which I don’t think is as likely as Rashad, Normani, or Simone getting it), then I think that David will be out.

And if you hadn’t noticed, I have a strong feeling that Normani, Simone, and Rashad will all make the finale. If that is true, then we just have to see the order in which everyone else will leave.

Next Week. . .

@juliadelbel: ...is going to suck.

@TheBentleyNinja: I kinda like next week’s theme. And I don’t necessarily hate the dance-offs. I just hope that we get some good matchups for it.

Next week on Dancing With the Stars is A Night at the Movies, where the seven remaining couples will perform dances to various different movie genres. And whoever gets the highest score of the night, will win immunity from elimination, making them eligible to not participate in round two. In round two, the other six couples will compete against against each other in one of three styles for extra points from the judges.

Plus, DWTS and La La Land choreographer Mandy Moore will be a guest judge, filling in for the absent Julianne Hough.

Also, Disney Channel stars from the new movie Descendants will perform.

Oh, and if the night wasn’t stressful enough for the couples with Mandy Moore judging and immunity & points up for grabs, week seven will be a double elimination.

This week’s press release gives the following information about next week’s dances.

  • Simone Biles and Sasha Farber will dance a Silent Films Charleston to Charleston by Bob Wilson & His Varsity Rhythm Boys
  • Bonner Bolton and Sharna Burgess will dance a Western Paso Doble to Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes by Aaron Copland
  • Rashad Jennings and Emma Slater will dance a Horror Paso Doble to O Fortuna by Carl Orff
  • Nancy Kerrigan and Artem Chigvintsev will dance a Romance Tango to Oh, Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison
  • Normani Kordei and Valentin Chmerkovskiy will dance a Foreign Argentine Tango to Quizàs, Quizàs, Quizàs by Andrea Bocelli featuring Jennifer Lopez
  • David Ross and Lindsay Arnold will dance a Sci-Fi Salsa to Universal Mind Control by Common
  • Nick Viall and Peta Murgatroyd will dance an Action Argentine Tango to Dangerous by David Guetta featuring Sam Martin

Also, on the dance overviews blog for DWTS INTERACT, Fatuma (@dwtsqueen on Twitter) will be a guest judge with us!

What did you think of Boy Bands vs. Girl Groups Night on Dancing With the Stars? Which individual dance do you think represented their Boy Band or Girl Group theme the best? Which team Freestyle dance did you like better- Team Boy Band or Team Girl Group? What did you think of Heather and Maks’s widespread shocking elimination? Who do you think will be eliminated next week.

Next week for A Night at the Movies with guest judge Mandy Moore, the couples who do not have immunity will face the possibility of elimination after the dance-offs! Two couples will be sent home, coming in seventh and sixth place!
